Engine Control Module: Service and Repair
Engine Control Module J623
• If it is desired to replace the Engine Control Module (ECM), connect the vehicle diagnostic tester and perform the guided function "Replace Engine Control Module (ECM)".
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Hot Air Gun from the Wiring Harness Repair Set (VAS 1978)
• Small Nozzle Attachment from the Wiring Harness Repair Set (VAS 1978)
• Locking Pliers
Removing
- Turn off the ignition.
- Remove the wiper arms.
- Remove the plenum chamber cover.
- Cover the engine compartment in the area near the ECM to prevent scratching the paint.
- Remove the bolts - 1 - and the ECM.
• The threads of the shear bolts are equipped with locking fluid. By heating the shear bolts using a hot air gun, inhibition effect of the locking fluid is lowered.
Make sure the parts cannot get burned.
By heating the shear bolts, parts of the protective housing are heated intensely. Wear safety gloves to prevent injuries.
- Heat the shear bolt - arrow - with a hot air gun.
- Loosen the bolt - 1 - with locking pliers.
- Bend the edges of the housing down and remove the bolts.
Installing
- Replace the protective housing.
- Install a new protective housing with new shear bolts.
- Tighten the shear bolts evenly until the bolt head shears off.
- Install the ECM into the plenum chamber.
- Install the plenum chamber cover.
- Install the wiper arms.
