Transmission Control Module (J217)

Short Description

The transmission control module is under the right front seat.

In order to remove the module, it is necessary unbolt the front seat from the vehicle body and then flip it toward the rear. The seat stays in the vehicle.

If the control module was replaced, then it is necessary to get the identification and coding of the old control module first before removing it.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051)

Removing

The control module identification and coding is needed only if the transmission control module is being replaced.

- Obtain the identification and coding for the old transmission control module.

- Move the front seat as far forward as possible.






- Remove the front seat track rear bolts - 2 and 3 -.

- Move the seat as far back as possible.

- Remove the front seat track front bolts - 1 and 4 -.

- Flip the front seat to the rear.

- Pull the carpet under the seat forward.

Remove both the transmission control module - 1 - and the housing and then separate them.






Ignore - 2 -.

- Disconnect the connector from the transmission control module - 1 -.

- Remove the bolt - upper arrow - and pull the housing with the control module out of the mount.






Ignore the nut - lower arrow -.

- Pull the retaining tabs outward - arrows 1 - and pull the control module out of the housing - arrow 2 -.






Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the following:

- Check the coding and code the new control module.

- Install the front seat.

- Follow the steps after connection of the battery.
