Installation
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)
Risk of injury. Follow all Warnings and Safety Precautions. Refer to => [ Warnings and Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.
• Always follow the procedure described in repair information when connecting the battery. The battery cut-out will be deactivated and damage to the vehicle electrical equipment may occur if the connecting sequence is not followed exactly. Refer to => [ Warnings and Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.
• Follow the instructions regarding the threaded connections on the battery terminals. Refer to => [ Battery Post/Terminal ] Battery Post/Terminal.
If battery is not secured properly, the following risks are possible:
• Shortened battery service life due to vibration damage (explosion hazard).
• if battery is not secured properly, the plates within the battery can be damaged.
• Damage to battery casing caused by bracket (possible electrolyte leakage, high subsequent costs).
• Inadequate crash safety.
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Install the battery hold-down bracket - 2 - and tighten the bolt - 1 - to 10 Nm.
- Install the battery retainer bracket - 2 - and tighten the bolt - 1 - to 9 Nm.
Make sure the central gas vent hose is attached to the battery - arrow - and that it cannot get disconnected when the battery is being installed. Only then can battery be properly vented.
- After installing, verify battery is properly seated.
Connect the battery terminals by hand to prevent damaging the battery case.
Do not put any grease on the battery terminals.

• Observe notes for threaded connections of battery terminals. Refer to => [ Battery Post/Terminal ] Battery Post/Terminal.
- Connect the battery positive clamp - 2 - to the battery positive terminal.
- Tighten bolt on the battery positive terminal to 6 Nm.
- Only after the positive ( B+ ) terminal has been secured should negative ( - ) terminal clamp - 1 - be installed.
- Tighten the bolt on the battery negative terminal to 6 Nm.
- Tape the carpet together.
- Connect battery. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Service and Repair.
- Adapt the battery data after replacing the battery. Refer to => [ Battery Data, Adapting ] Programming and Relearning.
