Idle Speed
Fig. 343 ADJUST THROTTLE VALVE:
NOTE:
The idle speed is controlled by an electronic control unit (ECU). Do not adjust idle speed, unless it is out of specified tolerances (see emission sticker or "SPECIFICATIONS").
1. Remove link rod from throttle pulley.
2. Check and adjust clearance between throttle valve and housing. Fig. 343. Clearance for checking should be 0.06 - 0.08 mm (0.0024 - 0.0032 in). When adjusting valve, set clearance to 0.07 mm (0.0028 in).
NOTE:
It may be necessary to loosen the throttle switch to center the valve, prior to adjusting it.
Fig. 361 CHECK THROTTLE PULLEY:
3. Check for smooth operation of control pulley and cable.
4. Adjust throttle cable Fig. 361. so it is stretched at idle, but does not affect control pulley position. At idle the control pulley should touch the stop.
5. With the gas pedal fully depressed, the control pulley should touch the full throttle stop.
Fig. 362 ADJUST AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION KICKDOWN CABLE:
6. Check kick-down cable (if equipped) adjustment by pressing the gas pedal to the floor and measuring the distance between cable sleeve and clip. Fig. 362. Do not operate throttle control by hand, it can give you a wrong reading. Measurement should reed 50.4 - 52.6 mm (1.98 - 2.07 in), adjust as necessary.
Fig. 363 CONNECT AND ADJUST LINK ROD:
7. Connect link rod.
8. Place a 1 mm (0.04 in) feeler gauge between control pulley and idle speed stop. Fig. 363. Clearance between lower adjustment screw and end stop should now be 0.1 mm (0.004 in). Adjust link rod as needed.
Fig. 326 IDLE SPEED TEST CONNECTOR:
9. Run engine until it has reached operating temperature and let it idle for an additional 10 minutes.
10. Connect a tachometer.
11. Ground the red - white wire from test connector. Fig. 326.
12. Turn air conditioner off.
13. Adjust idle speed to 700 RPM with idle screw.
14. Disconnect ground wire from test connector.
15. Idle speed must rise to 750 ± 20 RPM.
Fig. 327 CHECK THROTTLE SWITCH:
16. Check throttle switch by opening switch and listening for a "click". Fig. 327.
17. Adjust throttle switch by loosening retaining screws (3 mm screw). Turn switch slightly clockwise. Turn switch back again until "click" is heard. Tighten retaining screws. Recheck setting.
18. Disconnect any test equipment.
