Troubleshooting
***UPDATED BY TSB 2512, SEPTEMBER 1988
BOOST PRESSURE TOO LOW
1. Air cleaner clogged.
2. Throttle control incorrectly adjusted.
3. Engine fault such as low compression, incorrect valve clearance, or poor fuel supply.
4. Leakage between compressor housing and cylinder head or between cylinder head and exhaust turbine housing.
5. Wastegate stuck open.
6. Exhaust system restricted.
7. Boost pressure improperly adjusted.
8. Faulty turbocharger.
BOOST PRESSURE TOO HIGH
1. Leakage from hose between compressor housing and pressure actuator.
2. Pressure actuator diaphragm damaged.
3. Wastegate stuck closed.
4. Boost pressure improperly adjusted.
ENGINE KNOCKS
1. Fuel octane rating too low.
2. Ignition setting or retardation incorrect.
3. Boost pressure too high.
METALLIC NOISE FROM WASTEGATE
1. Preheating plates loose or cracked.
2. Wastegate housing or exhaust pipe loose.
3. Wastegate loose in guide.
NOISE OR VIBRATION FROM TURBOCHARGER
1. Preheating plates loose or cracked.
2. Intake or exhaust system leakage.
3. Poor turbocharger lubrication.
4. Imbalance on turbo shaft, turbine wheel, or compressor wheel due to damage.
OIL LEAKAGE AT TURBOCHARGER SHAFT SEALS
1. Air cleaner clogged (oil leakage on intake side causes blue smoke).
2. Exhaust system loose or leaks.
3. Excessive crankcase pressure.
4. Turbocharger oil return pipe clogged.
5. Turbocharger shaft seals damaged.
