Filling Of A/C System In Car With Refrigerant

FILLING OF A/C SYSTEM IN CAR WITH REFRIGERANT FROM RHS 650

WARNING:
- Always wear protective goggles and gloves when working with refrigerant. Contact with eyes and skin may cause frostbite.

- Before commencing work, read and observe SAFETY PRECAUTIONS when working on A/C systems.
Technician Safety Information

- Mixtures of R134a and compressed air must not be used for troubleshooting due to the risk of explosion at high pressures and temperatures
.

Vehicle Damage Warnings

NOTE:
- Use low-pressure connection (14) if RHS 650 unit requires to be filled with R134a from external gas bottle. This may be carried out at the same time (or later) as draining the A/C system through the high-pressure connection.
Drainage of A/C System

- 50 ml (0.052 qt) must be added to the quantity indicated by the gauge glass to allow for the refrigerant in the unit piping and in the filler hose between the unit and the A/C system service valve.

- Ensure that hoses are still connected following earlier vacuum pumping.
Checking System Tightness

- Use leak detector 951 1207 to further check connections which have been opened and remade.

- Maximum permissible quantity of refrigerant which may be used in leak testing is 200 grammes.





Filling:
1. Check refrigerant capacity of A/C system.

Also ensure that unit reservoir (22) contains sufficient refrigerant.





2. Filling A/C system with refrigerant:
- The main switch (11) should be closed (position 0).
- Valves (1), (2) and (3) should be closed. Valve (4) should be open.
- Use rubber ring on gauge glass (13) to indicate amount of refrigerant to be transferred to A/C system.
- Set selector switch (7) to CHARGING.
- Close main switch. The A/C system will now be filled with refrigerant. OBSERVE LEVEL IN UNIT GAUGE GLASS (22). Close valve (4) when marked level has been reached. Also close cock on A/C system service valve in car (by turning counterclockwise). This means that valve is released and does not activate Schraeder valve in car.





3. Evacuation of filler hose (blue):
- Open valves (1) and (2). Valves (3) and (4) should be closed.
- Set selector switch (7) to RECOVERY.
- Wait until lamp (9) has gone out, indicating that hose is clear of refrigerant.

NOTE: Gauge glass may indicate over 50 cc (0.052 qt) during recovery. However, this is normal since the reading includes refrigerant from the unit condenser.

4. Conclude filling operation:
- Close valves (1) and (2). Valves (3) and (4) should be closed.
- Set selector switch (7) to TEST.
- Disconnect connection fittings and disconnect hose from A/C system service valve.
- Close main switch (11).
5. Carry out performance test as described in SYSTEM PERFORMANCE TEST.

Vehicle Damage Warnings

NOTE: Low-pressure connection should be used if unit must be filled with refrigerant from separate storage container. This may be carried out while draining A/C system in car through high-pressure connection. If filling refrigerant in liquid form, quantify should not exceed 2 kg (4.409 lb) to avoid damage to compressor.

Filling:
1. Check SPECIFICATIONS to determine correct quantity of refrigerant in A/C system.

2. Check if system should be filled from high or low-pressure side.





3. Use rubber ring (32) on unit gauge glass (20) to indicate level which should be reached when quantity in A/C system is correct.





4. Press CHARGING (2) push-button. Observe level in unit gauge glass (20). Close cock (15) when level indicated by rubber ring is reached.
5. Close connection with car.
6. Press RECOVERY/RECLAIM (4) push-button. Open HIGH PRESSURE cock (15) again. Wait until green lamp goes out. Hose is now clear of refrigerant.
7. Close HIGH PRESSURE cock (15). Press RESET TEST push-button (5) and disconnect connection with car.
8. Carry out a final check using leak detector 951 1207.
