RE: SERVICE CAMPAIGN 48: CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM
On April 25, 1988, Volvo Cars of North America announced a voluntary safety related recall. This campaign affects certain 1986 and 1987 model year 240 series vehicles which will require replacement of the genuine Volvo cruise control system control unit.
Approximately 35,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada are to be recalled.
Laboratory tests have shown that a microprocessor in the control unit of the genuine Volvo cruise control system can be affected by a short duration voltage drop. If this occurs while the system is in the on position, the effect may be erratic cruise control function. The effect is neutralized as soon as the brake pedal is used or eliminated by switching the system off.
There is one (1) repair connected with this :
Repair Code B - Remove and replace control unit.

CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
Customer Service notices will be sent to owners of vehicles within the affected range. This notice requests that the owner contact his/her selling dealer to arrange for an appointment to have the corrective action carried out if their vehicle was fitted with a genuine Volvo cruise control system. Mailing will be scheduled to take place on or about May 16, 1988.
Parts Ordering
An initial allocation equal to approximately 40% of the quantity of affected cruise control kits purchased by your dealership will be made the week of May 9. Availability will be restricted to critical orders after the initial allocation.
Parts Return
Genuine Volvo cruise system control units part number 3517400-2 which are replaced will be required to be returned to Parts Testing.
Campaign Responsibility
Dealers are to repair all vehicles within the recall range regardless of mileage or vehicle age. This repair, covered under Recall 48, is free of charge to the owner. In the event that an owner has lost or misplaced the original Campaign Notice, he/she is not to be refused this important modification. For this purpose, a small supply of blank Vehicle Campaign Notices is available from your Volvo District Office. Your Regional Service Manager will follow up to ensure that this campaign is proceeding smoothly.
Campaign Reimbursement
The standard campaign form will be utilized for reimbursement.
Reimbursement is based on the repair code entered on the Vehicle Campaign Notice. The time allocation includes 0.1 hours for preparation/administration time over and above the time necessary for the modification.
