Section C - Mechanism

NOISE FROM THE MECHANISM

This section describes how to repair noise occuring between the sunroof and the mechanism.

C1

RATTLING NOISE FROM REAR EDGE

OCCURS:

^ Usually from the rear edge of the mechanism at the right and/or left side. (Component 1 in the illustration on sunroof components.)

ANALYSIS METHOD:

^ Open sunshade fully.

^ Drive car on uneven road surface, listen for rattling at the panels in the sunroof rear sides.

^ Tilt the sunroof rear edge and bang lightly with one hand on the inside of the panel.

ACTION:




- Remove sunroof according to the service manual:

- Install two tape sections approx. 20 mm (3/4") long (A and B) (P/N 6812838-8) at the guide rail mounting at the rear edge of the sunroof. (Install tape as close as possible to the sunroof mounting as shown.)

- Reinstall sunroof according to service manual.

- Reinstall panels according to service manual.

- Test drive and check that the noise has stopped.

NOISE WHEN CLOSING

OCCURS:

^ Usually when closing from tilt position.
(Component 11 in the illustration sunroof components).

ANALYSIS METHOD:

^ Listen to the sunroof while closing it from the tilt position.




^ Check that the plastic cap (A) is in position on the mechanism.

If the plastic cap (A) is missing:

- Replace guide rail using P/N 1390340-6 and 3509121-4 according to the service manual:

Section 8 (82-86, 88) Interior, exterior 850- 1993-.

RATTLING NOISE FROM SIDES OR FRONT

OCCURS:




^ Usually from the sides or front edge of the sunroof when operating the roof mechanism or when driving. (Component 13 in the illustration on sunroof components).

ANALYSIS METHOD:

^ Drive car on an uneven road surface and listen for rattling noise. The sunshade should be open. The courtesy lighting panel at the sunroof motor must be removed.

^ Press on the cables by hand through the hole at the sunroof motor and listen to see if the noise changes or disappears.

^ Operate the sunroof motor and listen for noise.

^ Remove sunroof according to the service manual.

^ Check if the drive cables or their pipes are contacting the bracket, roof or other equipment. (Release and drop down the headliner at the upper edge of the doors according to the service manual: Section 8 (82-86, 88) Interior, exterior 850- 1993-.)

ACTION:

- Install felt tape on the pipes where they might contact other objects.

- Reinstall sunroof according to service manual.

- Reinstall panels according to service manual.

- Test drive and check that the noise has stopped.

RATTLING NOISE FROM WIND DEFLECTOR

OCCURS:

^ Usually heard from the front edge of the sunroof. (Component 3 in the illustration sunroof components).

ANALYSIS METHOD:

^ Check position of the wind deflector.

ACTION:




- Adjust according to the service manual so that the lip of the wind deflector (A) touches the roof flange (B) when the wind deflector is in the open position.

- Operate the sunroof and move it backward.

- Adjust by undoing the screws (1 on each side). Use Torx T20 screwdriver

Note
Rubber lip (A), but not the hard section (C), must touch the roof flange (B).

- Press the wind deflector down and adjust if the hard section (C) contacts the front gutter (D).

- Reinstall all parts removed according to service manual: Section 8 (82-86, 88) Interior, exterior 850- 1992-.)

- Reinstall springs and blocks in the correct position according to the service manual.

- Close the sunroof.

- Test drive and check that the rattling noise has stopped.
