Warning Indicators [BD]
Brake Circuit Not Working
The brake fluid level sensor is fitted in the brake fluid reservoir and consists of a magnetic float which makes a contact if the brake fluid level falls below MIN. If the circuit is closed, this grounds a contact on the dashboard and the warning indicator comes on.
The warning indicators comes on when the ignition is switched on but the engine is not running. The light goes out when the engine starts (generator starts charging).
Warning: If the light comes on while driving or braking, the brake fluid level is too low. This needs to be dealt with before driving the car any further.
Parking Brake On
This warning indicator comes on when the parking brake is on. It comes on if a normally-open contact on the parking brake lever grounds an output on the dashboard. When the ignition is switched on, this light comes on whether the parking brake is on or not. Once the engine is running, it only comes on when the parking brake is on.
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) Not Working
This warning indicator comes on if the ABS system control module finds a fault in the ABS system. The control module switches the light on when the ignition is switched on or the engine starts. The light then goes out after approx. 2 seconds if no fault is found. If the warning indicator is on, the ABS system is not working but normal braking power is still available.
With some DTCs, the control module runs a test as soon as the ignition is switched on, which means that the warning indicator will stay on if the fault persists and the ABS system does not work.
With other DTCs, the control module only runs the test if some system is activated, the car moves off or when the speed exceeds approx 40 km/h (25 mph). This means that the warning indicator may go out as normal after about two seconds when the ignition is switched on or the engine starts, but the fault may still be there. The ABS system will not cut out until the warning indicator comes on.
If a fault is so serious that DTC 4-4-2 is posted, the warning indicator will stay on until the DTC is erased.
Important: Once DTCs have been erased, the ABS warning indicator will not go out until the car's speed exceeds around 30 km/h (18 mph), provided no new DTCs have been posted.
The control module houses the safeguards which cut the ABS system out and switch the ABS warning indicator on if there is a serious fault other than those which cause DTCs to be posted.
Important: If diagnosis is not complete by the time the car is moving at more than 10 km/h (6 mph), the ABS warning indicator will stay on and the ABS system will cut out.
These faults may show up as:
- Warning indicator comes on, but no DTCs posted except 1-1-1.
- Warning indicator comes on, cannot communicate with control module via DLC.
Note: This assumes warning indicator circuit is OK and that dashboard, DLC and selector cable are also OK.
Traction Control System (TRACS)
If the warning indicator comes on, TRACS is not working. The light comes on if a fault occurs in the TRACS system, the front brake discs threaten to overheat or there is a fault in the ABS system.
