BD. Indicator and Warning Lights
Automatic Transmission
The transmission control module (TCM) activates the indicator and warning light in the combined instrument. The light is steady when the ignition is turned on and when driving if:
- The gear shift selector is in positions 3 or L
- Driving mode W (winter) has been selected.
The light blinks when the ignition is turned on and when driving if:
- The TCM has recorded a fault in the transmission. There are certain exceptions, D. Volvo Diagnostic Trouble Code Table
If the fault is intermittent the indicator and warning light will go out after the ignition has been repeatedly turned on and off a certain number of times. Up to five repetitions can be required, depending on the DTC that has been set. For DTC 2-3-5, High Oil temperature, the lamp flashes only as long as the temperature of the oil exceeds +140°C (284°F).
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The MIL is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM Motronic 4.3). In some markets where an on-board diagnostics system (OBD) II is a legal requirement the transmission control module TCM can also activate the MIL light. The TCM will send a request to the ECM to activate the MIL light if a transmission malfunction that affects exhaust emissions occurs. This situation applies to the following transmission DTCs:
1-1-2 Short-circuit to battery voltage in solenoid S1 circuit
1-1-3 Fault in Transmission Control Module (TOM)
1-2-1 Short-circuit to ground in solenoid S1 circuit
1-2-2 Break in solenoid S1 circuit
1-2-3 Short-circuit to battery voltage in solenoid STH circuit
1-3-2 Fault in Transmission Control Module (TCM)
2-1-1 Fault in Transmission Control Module (TCM)
2-1-2 Short-circuit to battery voltage in solenoid S2 circuit
2-1-3 Throttle position (TP) signal too high
2-2-1 Short-circuit to ground in solenoid S2 circuit
2-2-2 Break in solenoid S2 circuit
2-2-3 Throttle position (TP) signal too low
2-3-2 Vehicle speed signal absent
3-1-1 Transmission RPM signal absent
3-1-3 Gear position sensor signal incorrect
3-2-2 Gear ratio incorrect
