NOTE: For more information on the diagnostic test modes DTM refer to Diagnostic Test Modes

CA. Volvo System Tester Scan Tool ST (Only certain markets, USA and Canada)

General

The Volvo System Tester Scan Tool with memory cassette for text readouts is a special tool that gives the user direct access to diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) transmitted from the data link connector (DLC). The memory cassettes for text readouts are available in certain markets (USA and Canada). For this reason all the menu texts and abbreviations used are in English. The memory cassette also contains text in French.

The communications interface with the Volvo On-board Diagnostics system is accessed by connecting the Scan Tool to the data link connector (DLC) A. Communication operates in diagnostic test modes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

The transmission control module (TCM) can be read off manually using the flashing code sequences, this however means relatively long flashing sequences for each incident. In contrast, using the facilities available in the ST, the TCM can be read off ten times faster. High speed activation occurs in approx. 10 seconds. After this initial period each operation takes only a few seconds to complete.

Depending on the system module to be activated the following abbreviations appear in the text display on the ST:

The Scan Tool Volvo System Tester keyboard functions

ENTER:

Activates the selected function and/or shows the next menu level.

EXIT:

The arrow keys are used for moving within the menus and scrolling the text on the display up or down when there is more text than can be displayed on one screen.

HELP:

The HELP key provides help functions for the keys in the menu that is being used at the time the HELP key is pressed.

The Display:

When the system is in operating mode a flashing symbol can be seen in the upper right-hand corner of the display. The abbreviations in the text display are explained in the table above. Text that requires the user to select or activate a function appears in CAPITAL letters. Text which gives information appears as lower case (small) letters.
