Brake Light Switch, Replacement and Adjustment [LC]



NOTE: There are two types of brake light switch. The older model has to be adjusted manually. The later one is self-adjusting.

Brake light switch (older model)

Preparations [LC1]
- Check that ignition is switched off.
- Remove battery negative lead.
- Remove sound insulation.

Removal [LC2]





- Undo locknut to brake light switch.
- Unscrew brake light switch.
- Remove connector.

Installing [LC3]





- Depress brake pedal 12 mm (0.47"). Lock pedal in that position using a pedal jack.
- Screw in new brake light switch.
- Install connector.

Adjustment [LC4]

- Remove pedal jack and release brake pedal.
- Undo locknut if not already loose.
- Install battery negative lead if removed.





- Unscrew brake light switch (from brake pedal) until brake light comes on.
- Screw switch in gently (towards brake pedal) until brake light goes out again.
- Tighten locknut. Check that switch position does not change.
- Check that leads are not twisted.
- Install sound insulation.

Brake light switch (later model)

Preparations [LC5]
- Check that ignition is switched off.
- Remove sound insulation.

Removal [LC6]

- Depress brake pedal and lock it in the depressed position with a pedal jack.





- Push brake light switch casing forwards towards pedal support bracket to release the white locking sleeve.
- Pull the white locking sleeve towards the tip of the brake light switch as far as it will go.
- Push in brake light switch locking clamps and remove switch.
- Remove connector.

Checking [LC7]





Check that the new brake light switch to see that:
- the white locking sleeve is completely extended towards the brake light switch tip.
- locking clips do not meet white locking sleeve.

Installing [LC8]

Note: Brake pedal must be depressed.





- Install connector.
- Install brake light switch. Check switch positioning in bracket.
- Push brake light switch home. You should hear a distinct click as the locking clips clip onto the bracket.
- Remove pedal jacket.

[LC9]
- Pull brake pedal gently up as far as it will go. The brake light switch will then adjust itself automatically.
- Rock (do not pull) gently on the brake light switch and checking that it is firmly in place.

[LC10]
- Check that brake light is working.
- In cars with automatic gearshift (transmission) and shift-lock, check that shift-lock is working.
- Replace sound insulation.
