P. Gear selector assembly, (models from 93 on) Repair/replacement and replacement/adjustment of shift lock/key lock functions

Replacement of gear selector knob
Remove gaiter from knob.
Grip gaiter by retaining clip (located on inside). Turn gaiter through quarter turn and pull down. Make sure the retaining clip returns to original position inside the gaiter after removal.

Remove knob by pulling upward off lever.
NOTE: Considerable force is required to remove knob.

Install new knob and lock button.
Push retaining clip slightly into gaiter. Do not turn the retaining clip. Push gaiter over catches, against edge of knob.
Press up retaining clip, check that it engages the catches on the knob.

Replacement of gaiter
Remove the gear selector knob as per P1-P2.
Free gaiter from shutter.
Cut cord and remove gaiter.
Remove gaiter retaining clip.

Install new gaiter.
Remove foam padding from new gaiter. Turn gaiter inside out. Thread gaiter onto knob with seams to side. Tighten cord and press clip into position (with rounded edge against knob).

Turn gaiter right side out
Reinstall foam padding in gaiter. Press knob and gaiter onto lever as per P3.
Work gaiter over edge catches of shutter. Tighten cord. Cut off excess length.

Replacement of light molding
Remove:
- Negative battery lead
- Center console as per L3-L4. L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
- Lampholder from light moulding.
Cut off retaining clips with snippers, ensuring that plastic pins are not damaged. Remove light molding.
Install new molding and new clips.
Install:
- Lampholder.
- Center console as per L8 L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
- Battery negative lead.

Replacement of indicator panel, shutter
Remove:
- Negative battery lead.
- Center console as per L3-L4. L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
- Gear shift knob as per P1-P2
- Panel and shutter. Depress catches at front edge of panel and lift slightly. Prise side catches outward, and remove panel and shutter.

Transfer or install new gaiter to shutter
Install:
- The shutter. Check that the indicator is on correct side of lever.
- The panel. Start at rear edge and then press into position in middle. Press home catches at front edge.
- Center console as per L8 L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
- Gear shift lever knob as per P3
- Battery negative lead.

Replacement of P-shift lock function
Remove:
- Battery negative lead.
- Gear shift knob as per P1-P2
- Center console as per L3-L4. L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
Remove locking mechanism
Use needle-nose pliers to remove detent. Remove push rod and spring. On cars up to 95 (B) the guide is combined in the push rod unit. If necessary, use a thin, bent welding rod to lift hook and guide.

Reinstall locking mechanism.
Lubricate lower section of push rod, the guide and spring with grease, P/N 1161417-9 (1161437-7 (USA, Canada).
Reinstall spring, guide (A, model years -93/-94 and push rod. Press down push rod and insert detent in end.
Install:
- Center console as per L8 L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
- Gear shift lever knob as per P3
- Battery negative lead.
Replacement of gear shift locking mechanism and locking cam for key- lock

Remove the gear shift assembly as per P16- P18.
- Remove the P-shift lock function as per P10.
- Tap out spindle and remove the gear shift from the assembly.

Replacement of the lock cam. (Only cars with key lock)
- Remove the lock cam from the gear shift assembly.
- Press new lock cam into position.

Replacement of gear shift lever and spring mechanism
Model years -93/-94 (A)
Model years -95 (B)
Remove components for the assemblies.
Lubricate components with grease PIN 1161417-9, (1161437-7 USA, Canada)
Install components.

Install:
- Lever in the gear shift assembly. Spindle. Use drift to tap in spindle.
- Detent locking function as per P11
- Gear shift assembly P20-P22
- Gear shift lever knob as per P3
- Battery negative lead.

Replacement of gear shift assembly
Remove:
- Negative battery lead
- Center console as per L3-L4. L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
- Gear shift knob as per P1-P2
Release transmission cable from gear lever mechanism
Use flat-nosed pliers to remove cable pin.
Remove retaining clip securing cable sleeve to selector housing.
Remove lampholder from light molding.

Only cars with shift lock:
Open solenoid connector.
Only cars with key lock:
Move gear shift lever to position P and turn ignition key to position I or II.
Release key lock cable from adjustment point and locking plate in gear selector housing.

Remove crosspiece between SIPS members.
Remove the two bolts at the front of the selector housing.
Remove assembly.
NOTE: Take care that the cable and sheath are not damaged.

Transfer or install new components to new assembly.
- Rubber bushings
- Guide sleeves
- Other components: shutter with gaiter, indicator; gear shift knob etc. Refer to the operations in P.

Install gear selector assembly
Insert gear selector cable in gear selector assembly
Ensure that guide sleeves are seated in rubber bushings.
Install crosspiece between SIPS members.
Tighten selector housing bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs).
Tighten crosspiece bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs).

Install:
- Cable sleeve in selector housing with retaining clip
- Cable to gear lever arm with spindle.

Only cars with shift lock:
Reconnect solenoid connector.
Only cars with key lock:
Move gear shift lever to position P and turn ignition key to position I or II.
Reconnect key lock cable to locking plate and adjustment point in gear selector housing.
Check key lock function as per P38-P41.
Install:
- Lampholder on light molding.
- Center console as per L8 L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
- Battery negative lead.

Replacement of shift lock solenoid and microswitch
Remove:
- Battery negative lead.
- Center console as per L3-L4. L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
On cars with key lock:
Move gear selector lever to position P.
Turn ignition key to position I or II.
Right-hand drive models only:
Disconnect connector and lampholder from light molding.

Disconnect key lock cable from locking plate and adjusting point in gear lever assembly.
Open solenoid connector and unclip from selector housing.

Move gear shift lever to position L.
Remove solenoid and microswitch.
- Release solenoid clip by pressing locking tabs.
- Microswitch clip. Press locking tabs together.
Remove retaining clip from microswitch.

Move gear shift lever to position L.
Install:
- New solenoid. Secure with clip.
- Retaining clip on the new microswitch
- Microswitch.
Install and reconnect solenoid connector.

Only cars with key lock:
Reconnect key lock cable.
Move gear shift lever to position P and turn ignition key to position I or II.
Connect cable to locking plate and adjustment point in gear selector housing.
On right-hand drive models:
Install lampholder in light molding.

Reconnect battery ground lead.

Remove:
- Battery negative lead.
- Center console as per L3-L4. L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment

Remove:
- Steering column covers
- Soundproofing panel and knee bolster underneath dashboard
- Fold back camet and remove side panel.

Disconnect cable from ignition switch
- Move gear shift lever to position P.
- Turn ignition key to position I or II.
- Depress cable end locking tabs in ignition switch and withdraw cable.

Disconnect cable from adjustment point and locking plate in gear selector housing.
Right-hand drive models only:
Remove:
- Lamp holder from light molding.
- Remove cable from retaining clip and cable.

Install new cable. Ensure that gear shift lever is in position P.
Insent cable in opening in center console.
On right-hand drive models only
Ensure that cable is positioned to left of heater drain hose as illustrated. See arrow.
- Secure cable with retaining clip
- Connect cable to locking plate
- Install cable adjuster in gear selector housing.

Left-hand drive models:
Insert cable in ignition switch.
Clip cable in position.
Four clips are used on left-hand drive models.

On right-hand drive models:
Insert cable in ignition switch.
Clip cable in position.
Two clips are used on right-hand drive models.

Basic adjustment of cable:
Move gear shift lever from P to another position.
Clearance between locking tabs at ignition switch end is approx. 7 mm (0.28"). Adjust at the gear lever end.

Turn ignition key to position I or II.
Press cable into position in ignition lock.
Ensure that locking tabs are securely engaged in ignition lock.
Move gear shift lever to position P. Check that clearance between cable and locking plate is appox. 0.5 - 1.mm (0.19-0.4").

Check key lock function:
Move gear shift lever to position P
gnition key should be easy to remove from ignition lock.
If key cannot be removed, cable is too short. Adjust by slackening cable at adjustment point and repeat check.

Move lever to position other than P
It should not be possible to remove the ignition key from ignition lock.
If key can be removed, cable is too long. Adjust by tightening cable at adjustment point until key cannot be removed.

Check shift-lock override function
Move gear shift lever to position P and turn ignition key to position I or II. NOTE! Do NOT depress brake pedal.
Depress the override button. Try moving the gear shift from position P. It should be possible to move the gear shift selector.
Return lever to position P and remove ignition key.
Press override button. It should not now be possible to move lever from position P. Override function should operate only when ignition key is in position I or II.
If adjustment is needed, adjust as per P41.

Adjustment of shift-lock override function
If the gear shift selecotr can b moved from the P position with the ignition key removed from the ignition lock:
- Tighten cable by turning at adjustment point approx. 1 turn in the direction of the arrow on the picture. Check function.
- If required tighten cable 1/2 turns more, turning adjuster in the direction of the arrow on the picture.

Reinstall side panel and fold back carpet.
Install:
- Knee bolster. Tighten nuts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs).
- Soundproofing panel
- Steering column covers
- Center console as per L8. L. Transmission Cable, Replacement/Adjustment
- Battery negative lead.
