3-3-2 Open-circuit in solenoid SL circuit
Principle of operation
Solenoid SL controls the transmission lock-up function when supplied with battery voltage. This is supplied by the TCM, which delivers engagement and disengagement signals based on the vehicle speed, throttle position and driving mode.
Fault description
Open-circuit has occurred at some point in solenoid SL control circuit and solenoid supply has been interrupted, preventing correct operation of lock-up function. Gearshifting takes place as normal.
Troubleshooting should indicate if the open-circuit is in the leads or in the solenoid, or if the fault is in the TCM.
Circuit description
The circuit consists of the TCM, a number of connectors and solenoid (SL) in the transmission.

Testing solenoid SL in test mode 4
- Move gear selector lever to position P.
Test solenoid SL in test mode 4 use stethoscope to hear solenoid click more clearly. Displaying & Reading Trouble Codes
- If solenoid does not click, fault is permanent.
- If solenoid clicks, fault is occurring only intermittently under particular conditions, making it considerably more difficult to locate.

Measuring resistance of solenoid and wiring
- Switch off ignition.
- Connect break-out box to wiring.
Measure resistance between # 8 (S1) and # 12 (SG) with ohmmeter.
- If instrument indicates 10-15 Ohm, solenoid and leads are OK.
Check leads and connectors for open-circuits and poor connections as described in Testing and Inspection. Component Tests and General Diagnostics
If this check indicates that leads and connections are OK, DTC is due to intermittent fault. Return to Testing and inspection. Diagnostic Procedures
- If instrument indicates other value, proceed to next step.

Measuring solenoid resistance
- Switch off ignition.
- Measure at connector E on transmission (solenoid side).
Connect ohmmeter between terminal 3 (SL) and ground terminal on transmission.
- If instrument indicates under 10 Ohm or over 15 Ohm, solenoid SL or wiring between solenoid and connector on transmission is faulty. Proceed to next step.
- If instrument indicates 1O-15 Ohm, solenoid is OK.

Measuring resistance of control system
- Remove Transmission pan to gain access to Solenoids.
- Disconnect solenoid SL connector. Measure resistance between pin on solenoid SL and ground terminal on transmission. Instrument should indicate 10-15 Ohm if solenoid SL is OK.
- If instrument indicates correct value, fault is in wiring harness between transmission connector and solenoid S1. Replace harness.
- If instrument reading is incorrect, replace solenoid SL.
If DTC is again displayed when the car is test driven although measured resistance is correct, TCM may be faulty.
