Engine Is Difficult to Start
FAULT TRACING INFORMATIONConditions
^ DTC's absent.
^ Engine warm.
Fault Sources
^ Contact resistance in Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor connector.
^ Defective RPM sensor.
^ Contact resistance in Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor connector.
^ Contact resistance in Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor connector.
^ Defective ECT sensor.
^ Faulty fuel or residual pressure.
TESTING PROCEDURE
Clean and Grease ECM Connector
^ Ignition OFF.
^ Remove ECM.
^ Check ECM connector for contact resistance and oxidation.
^ Reinstall ECM.
When connector fixed:
- Clean and grease ECT sensor connector.
Clean and Grease Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Connector
^ Ignition OFF.
^ Disconnect ECT sensor.
^ Check ECT sensor connector for contact resistance and oxidation.
^ Connect ECT sensor.
When connector fixed:
- Check engine temperature.
Check Engine Temperature
^ Ignition ON.
^ Check that engine temperature value OK.
Engine temperature should read over 75°C (167°F) for warm engine. Upper cooler hose should be hot.
If value OK:
- Clean and grease CMP sensor connector.
If value differs:
- Test with a new ECT sensor.
- Proceed to: Clean and grease CMP sensor connector.
Clean and Grease Camshaft Position Sensor Connector
^ Ignition OFF.
^ Disconnect CMP sensor.
^ Check CMP sensor connector for contact resistance and oxidation.
^ Connect CMP sensor.
When connector fixed:
- Check Engine Speed (RPM) Sensor.
Check Engine Speed Sensor
^ Ignition OFF.
^ Disconnect RPM sensor.
^ Connect an ohmmeter between RPM sensor connector contacts 1 and 2 (to RPM sensor).
Ohmmeter should read 240 ohms (a max. of 400 ohms with warm engine).
If value OK:
- Clean and grease RPM sensor connector.
If value differs:
- Test with a new RPM sensor.
- Proceed to: Clean and grease RPM sensor connector.
Clean and Grease RPM Sensor Connector
^ Ignition OFF.
^ RPM sensor disconnected.
^ Check RPM sensor connector for contact resistance and oxidation.
^ Connect RPM sensor.
When connector fixed:
- Clean and grease power stage connector.
Clean and Grease Power Stage Connector
^ Ignition OFF.
^ Check both power stage connectors for contact resistance and oxidation.
^ Connect power stage.
When connectors fixed:
- Clean and grease ignition coil connectors.
Clean and Grease Ignition Coil Connectors
^ Ignition OFF.
^ Check all ignition coil connectors for contact resistance and oxidation.
^ Connect all Ignition coils.
When connectors fixed:
- Proceed to: Spark Plugs.
Spark Plugs
^ Ignition OFF.
^ Replace all spark plugs.
NOTE: It is very important that the correct spark plugs are used. Also check gaps of new plugs before fitting. Spark plug gap should be 0.7 - 0.8 mm.
^ Connect all spark plugs.
^ Continue with a check of fuel and residual pressures.
