Transmission Position Sensor/Switch: Service and Repair

PREPARATION

1. Disconnect battery ground lead.
2. Unclip HO2S lead from transmission member and oil pan and open HO2S connectors.





3. Remove front exhaust pipe.
4. Remove front heat shield.





5. Disconnect gear selector link from shaft at left-hand side of transmission.
6. Undo clips securing sensor wiring at each side of transmission.
7. Open connector.
8. Move wiring to right-hand side of transmission.





9. Disconnect oil pipe and plug connections.

REMOVE SENSOR

1. Remove nut, complete with lock washer and rubber washer.
2. Remove sensor adjusting screw.
3. Pull sensor unit and wiring off shaft.

INSTALL NEW SENSOR

Note: The wiring is undivided in the case of the component used in later models and stocked as a spare.

1. Move wiring to top of transmission.
2. Install adjusting screw temporarily to hold sensor against transmission housing.
3. Install rubber washer, lock washer and nut. Tighten to 7 Nm (5 ft lb).
4. Lock nut with lock washer.
5. Reconnect oil pipe.





6. Reconnect connector and clip wiring in position.
7. Mount gear selector link on shaft Tighten to 18 Nm (15 ft lb).
8. Adjust sensor, See ADJUSTMENTS
9. Install heat shield, exhaust pipe and HO2S wiring. Reconnect HO2S connectors.
10. Secure wiring to transmission member and oil pan.
11. Reconnect battery ground lead.
12. Erase Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) (if any)
