Trailing Arm: Service and Repair
TOOL REQUIRED- 999 5346 Counterhold
- 999 5347 Drift
- 999 5573 Press Tool
- 999 5575 Puller Cylinder
- 999 5577 Compression Tool
- 999 5578 Spacer Socket
- Or Equivalent
1. Raise the car
- Position the rear lifting arms so they do not obstruct the support arms and the arm brackets.
SUPPORT ARM REMOVAL
2. Support arm removal
a. Remove the wheels.
b. Install compression tool.
- Apply the compression tool lightly against the link.
c. Remove:
- Lower screw on the damper, then tap off damper from support arm.
- Anti-roll bar screws on both sides.
d. Press anti-roll bar up so it is freed from the support arm.
3. Press up link to normal position.
a. Secure the compression tool with locking pin.
b. Release pressure from hydraulic cylinder.
c. Remove:
- Support arm screws in front and rear edges.
Unscrew nut in front edge.
Tap support arm off the wheel bearing housing.
- The nut in front edge.
- Support arm.
REPLACE FRONT BUSHING, SUPPORT ARM
4. Remove bracket from support arm.
5. Locate spacer between the bushings.
6. Press out the bushings.
- Use drift counterhold.
- Press out one bushing at a time.
7. Press in the bushings from the side for each bushing.
- Take care that they are located in the correct position.
- Use drift counterhold.
8. Install:
a. Bracket to support arm.
- Use new screws and nuts.
- Line up bracket when tightening.
b. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.), protractor tighten 120°.
REPLACE REAR BUSHING, SUPPORT ARM
9. Replace Rear Bushing:
a. Remove the brake caliper.
b. Hang caliper up with a wire to avoid damaging it.
NOTE: Before, removing mark disc position in relation to the hub.
c. Brake disc.
10. Remove:
a. Parking brake pads.
b. Screws on protective shield.
- Turn the shield so the hole for the brake caliper lines up exactly on the bushing.
c. Use a cable tie to fasten the shield.
11. Use a chisel to free the flange on the bushing.
- Check that counterhold is in contact with the wheel bearing housing's machined surface.
12. Press out the bushing.
- Use puller cylinder together with counterhold, drift and puller.
13. Press in the new bushing.
a. Line up the bushing as shown.
- The flat section of the bushing inner sleeve should be up.
b. Use puller cylinder together with drift, counterhold and puller.
14. Install:
a. Protective shield.
- Use new screws.
- Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
b. Parking brake pads.
- Use a cable tie to hold the shoes in place when the springs are inserted.
c. The brake disc against the markings made on removal tighten the guide pin to 10 Nm (8 ft. lbs.).
d. Brake caliper.
- Use new screws.
- Tighten to 60 Nm (47 ft. lbs.).
INSTALL SUPPORT ARM
15. Install support arm.
- Install all screws, do not tighten.
- Tighten the rear screw.
- Tighten to 80 Nm (63 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten front nut.
- Tighten to 80 Nm (63 ft. lbs.).
- Tighten remaining screws.
- Tighten to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
16. Install damper:
a. Standard damper:
- Compress damper by hand and hook on.
- Use new screws.
- Tighten to 80 Nm (63 ft. lbs.).
b. Self-levelling damper:
- Release pressure from compression tool and hook on damper Push up to normal position.
- Use new screws.
- Tighten to 80 Nm (63 ft. lbs.).
c. Install new screws on the anti-roll bar both sides, do not tighten.
d. Remove the compression tool.
17. Install the wheel.
- Lower car completely.
- Tighten anti-roll bar screws.
- Tighten to (63 ft. lbs.).
