GEAR SHIFT, AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS CHECKING/ADJUSTING.

A new control rod to transfer gear shift movement from the gear selector to the automatic transmission has been introduced in production on 940/960 cars with automatic transmission from chassis numbers listed below.

The new control rod has an adjuster sleeve with lock nuts for longitudinal adjustment.

Factory Code: Model: Chassis No:

1 944 208555
1 945 150921
1 964 66203
1 965 24526

CHECKING/ADJUSTING THE GEAR SHIFT:

Select gear position R Press the gear shift gently forward so that there is no free play, use a support.

Note:
The parking brake must not be applied.

RAISE THE CAR

Loosen the lock nut on the adjuster. Use large slip-joint pliers as a counterhold.

Loosen nut on shaft to the gear shift actuating arm. Release the control rod from the actuator arm.

Press the actuator arm (see arrow) backward on the transmission to the P position.

Check that the P position has really been selected by trying to turn the propeller shaft.

Adjust length on the control rod by turning the adjuster so the control rod can be easily attached to the actuator arm shaft.

Reinstall the control rod to the actuator arm shaft. Tighten in place using 25 Nm (18 ft.lbs) to tighten the nut. Tighten the adjuster nut. Use large slip-joint pliers as a counterhold so that there is no tension in the control rod.

CHECK THE ADJUSTMENT

Move the gear shift to position D. Check that there is free play towards position N.

Move the gear shift to position 2 or 3. Check that there is free play towards positions 1 or 2 or L.
