This Service Bulletin supersedes 45-9O6 dated January 1996.

New propeller shaft multilink

A new rubber on tube (RUT) propeller shaft was introduced into production during early model year 1996 from:

964 1 82919

965 1 30491.

The new (RUT) propeller shaft is also available as a retrofit for the following vehicles:

The new service kit, P/N 2722056 contains:

- propeller shaft 9163910-4

- rear flange 9176127-0

- pinion nut 3549685-0

- 4 bolts, for rear flange 980761-1

- 4 bolts for front flange 6814141-5

- 4 nuts for front flange 6814142-3

This new kit should only be used to retrofit vehicles within the chassis breaks listed at the beginning of this bulletin.

Method of replacing propeller shaft

Removing propeller shaft

Put gear selector in neutral.

Ensure that the parking brake is not engaged.

Raise the car.

Remove

- Propeller shaft from front flange. Use socket 999 5244

- One of the fuel tank support bolts, and twist support to one side

- Propeller shaft from rear flange. Use 999 5661 as a counterhold.

Remove

- The two bolts holding the propeller shaft center bearing.

- The four bolts holding the center bearing member.

NOTE! Save the washer between beating and member so it can be reused.

- Propeller shaft from car by pulling it straight forward.

Flange

Remove nut holding flange

Always use counterhold 999 5561

Remove flange

If the flange is stuck, use puller 999 5304. Put a container under the car to collect oil draining from the final drive.

Press the new flange into place Use press tool 999 5504

Use a new, oiled nut. There must be no axial play. Tighten to 180- 200 Nm (133 - 148 ft.lbs). Use counterhold 999 5561.

Note that 200 Nm (148 ft.lbs) must not be exceeded. The forces on the pinion bearing may become too great, causing it to seize.

Installing propeller shaft

Check that the contact surfaces on the gearbox, final drive and propeller shaft flanges are free of dirt and rust.

Insert the propeller shaft from the front. Note! Locate the rear joint on the final drive flange.

Install

- Center bearing member.

- Bolts for center bearing.

Note! Washer between member and bearing.

- Do not tighten bolts.

Install the rear joint to flange

Use new bolts.

Tighten bolts crosswise to 60 Nm (44 ft.lbs).

Install front joint

Use new bolts and nuts.

Tighten bolts crosswise to 50 Nm (37 ft.lbs).

Use tool 999 5244.

Tighten center bearing member and center bearing

bolts

Tightening torques 25 Nm (18 ft.lbs)

Install fuel tank support

Tightening torques 25 Nm (18 ft.lbs).

Fill final drive with oil according to specification.
