1996 power seat diagnostics

REFERENCE: TP 3201511, SECTION 8 (85), POWER SEAT WITH MEMORY FUNCTION; 940/960 1992-

This service bulletin supersedes earlier service bulletin 85-922 from Dec. 1995 and Tech DCS-GRAM 85-04; 11/95, which should be discarded.

1996 Power seat diagnostics

This Service Bulletin applies to cars with power seats with memory function model year 1996 with the following chassis numbers:

964 76200 - 79589

965 28100 - 29254

Cars with these chassis numbers have the power seat diagnostic system disabled, this means that the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) can be used only if the power seat control module is replaced with the updated control module. An early version control module was used in cars with these chassis numbers because of the late delivery of the new control module. The early version control module works correctly on model year 1996 cars, with the exception of diagnostic capabilities.

If a fault occurs in the power seat on cars with the above chassis numbers check potentiometers, motors, cables and connections for faults first.

If no other faults can be detected, replace the power seat control module, (see below for P/N) and check the function of the power seat.

On some cars with the above chassis numbers a disconnected cable must be connected before diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) can be read off using the Volvo Scan Tool (ST). When the new control module has been installed the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) can be used and a function check should be carried out.

The new control modules have P/N 9174904A for the left seat and
9174905-1 for the right seat

Method:

Replace control module according to Service Manual Section 8 (85) Power Seat 700/900 1983- TP 8501201

NOTE!
Lock the SIPS bag before removing the seat from the car! See Service Manual Section 8(88) SIPS bag 960 1995- TP 8806201.

The control module connector is under the rail at the front of the outer seat rail.

The cable to position 4 in the 4 pin connector (gray) should be connected.

In some cars with the chassis numbers on page one the cable to position 4 has been disconnected and folded double.

If this is the case, connect the cable to position 4 in the connector to allow communication between the control module and the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).

See provisional Service Manual Section 8(85) Power seat 9001850 1996- TP 8504201 for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

Function check

Activate each motor for 3 seconds in both directions.

Program the three seat memory functions. Check that the seat goes to its programmed positions.

Check diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

Note
- Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) PSL/PSR 421 may sometimes be posted for no reason. If it does not recur after it has been erased, no further action need be taken.

- Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) PSL/PSR 423 is stored if a button has been pressed for too long (more than about 60 seconds). If it does not recur after it has been erased, no further action need be taken.

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) PSL/PSR 424 "Control panel not connected" is permanent, it cannot be erased.

Unlock SIPS bag when service operations are completed.
