Replacing valve stem seal

To remove a valve stem seal use grip tool 999 5219-4.

A companion tool for this grip tool was introduced during the summer of 1996 to help remove difficult valve stem seals. The companion tool is a slide hammer with P/N 998 9740-7.

When installing valve stem seal locate a protective sleeve over the valve stem so that the collet grooves do not damage the seals.

The protective sleeve is supplied with the valve stem seal kit, P/N 272226-2. It is also available as a separate replacement part with P/N 1332645-4.

The protective sleeve is the same as for 4-cylinder engines and therefore has a slightly larger internal diameter that the valve stem.

Method

Lubricate and install protective sleeve (A) on valve stem before installing valve stem seal (B).

Lubricate both protective sleeve and valve stem seal.
