Noise from windshield moulding
OBSERVATION:
While driving over approx. 50 mph (80 kph), noise can be heard from the dashboard/ windshield area. The sound, caused by air penetrating between the moulding and windshield, can sound like flapping, rattling, or buzzing.
CAUSE:
This can be a result of the windshield moulding not being held tightly against the windshield. Correct the problem as follows.
Tool
Bend a putty knife into the shape shown.
In most cases, it will be sufficient to tighten the clips against the body.
The illustrations show
a loose clip (A)
and a securely tightened clip (B).
760/960 with PUR-bonded windshield
Place protection between tool and glass. Insert tool under moulding at each clip position and feel if clips can be moved a millimeter or so side to side. If clips can all be moved, press each clip to side in "counterclockwise" direction (see illus. arrows) to seat them firmly against body. (Illustration shows outside of windshield as viewed from the front.)
If a clip cannot be moved in either direction, it has probably adhered to PUR adhesive. In this case, the moulding must be removed and all clips replaced.
Moulding removal
With protection between tool and glass, insert tool under moulding and pry loose clip as illustrated, taking care to avoid damage to moulding.
Ensure that all remains of PUR adhesive are removed at clip positions.
Install new, black clips (pin 1342004-7).
First install clips loosely (i.e., do not tighten against body flange).
Reinstall molding if undamaged.
Otherwise, replace moulding.
Press clips home.
Place protection between tool and glass. Insert tool under moulding and press clips "counterclockwise" until they are firmly seated against body.
740/940
Since these models are not equipped with PUR-bonded windshields, it is normally sufficient to tighten the clips by pressing "counterclockwise" against body flange.
