Front brakes squeal
If a customer complains about front brakes squeal, anti-noise shims can be installed in the caliper as follows.
The shims will be introduced into production on new 960 models from 1996.
Materials: Shim kit P/N 272187-6
METHOD:
Raise the car and remove wheels Mark the position of the wheels if there is no locating stud.
Place stands under jacking points
Remove guide pin screw.
Raise the caliper and hook up with a wire
Remove brake pads.
Note
Do not depress the brake pedal with the brake pads removed!
Clean brake pad contact surfaces in the caliper.
Press back piston completely
Use water pump pliers. Take care not to damage its protective covering. Be sure to release the air trapped under the boot.
Piston stiffness may be due to oxidation. This is characterized by the piston not springing back when pressed in. In this case the caliper must be replaced.
Note
When pressing back the piston, the level in the brake fluid reservoir may rise causing brake fluid to spill out. Clean up spillages.
Check the piston dust seal
If dirt has penetrated the cylinder because of a damaged dust seal, the caliper must be reconditioned.
Check:
- that there is no rust between the guide plate and caliper retainer. Clean if required.
- the boot for sliding bolts. Replace if damaged. See reconditioning, page 43 in Service Manual
