REFERENCE: TP 3136911, SECTION 6, 7 (60-64, 70-74), FRONT SUSPENSION AND STEERING, 700 1982-19.. THIS SERVICE BULLETIN SUPERSEDES SB 64-906 DATED APRIL 1995.
Power steering, chattering sound from cooling loop
The cooling loop can cause a chattering sound due to pressure pulses in the power steering system. This sound will most likely occur at low speeds, on rough roads, when turning the wheel sharply left or right.
The sound can be minimized by replacing the banjo fitting on the steering gear and installing a new, softer return line 720 mm (28.3 in) in length and a new banjo fitting. The hose should be installed as a loop between the steering gear banjo fitting and cooling loop and be secured by tie straps.
MATERIALS P/N ITEM(S)
Return line 720 mm (28.3 in) 980477-4 1
Banjo pipe 3530775-0 1
Screw clamp 943470-5 2
Tie strap 948211-8 3
Aluminum washer for return connection 9157596-9 2
Hydraulic fluid ATF type F or G or Volvo hydraulic fluid P/N 1161317-1
REPLACEMENT OF RETURN LINE AND BANJO FITTING
Operations:
- Clamp the return line using hose pliers between the cooling loop and the power steering fluid reservoir.
- Raise the car.
- Remove splashguard under engine.
- Use a catch pan under the steering gear for spillage.
- Loosen bolt (A) which secures the plate to the crossmember, and bolt (C) which secures the control arm to the crossmember and If needed, pry plate gently to access bolt (B).
- Remove the return line from the steering gear (arrow (B) in illustration) and the cooling loop.
INSTALLATION OF NEW RETURN LINE
Operations:
- Use the new banjo fitting, P/N 3530775-0.
- Use the new return line, 720 mm long (28.3 in), P/N 980477-4.
- Install the line on the banjo fitting using clamp, P/N 943470-5.
- Install the return line and banjo fitting with the banjo fitting screw and two (2) new aluminum washers (P/N 9157596-9) on the steering gear.
- tighten the return line banjo fitting screw (B) in the steering gear to 50 Nm (37 ft.lbs).
- Tighten the plate bolt (A) to 24 Nm (18ft.lbs).
- Tighten control arm crossmember bolt (C) to 90 Nm (66 ft.lbs).
Note
Use new aluminum washers! The tightening torque 50 Nm (37 ft.lbs) is only to be applied to the return line banjo fitting screw!
- Detach the cooling loop from the clip at the horn and the screw at the sway bar mounting.
- Position the hose in a loop as shown along the front side member and connect using clamp, P/N 943370-5, on the cooling loop.
- Replace the cooling loop.
- Wipe off any fluid spillage.
- Use tie straps to clamp the new hose to the cable conduit and the hose between the power steering fluid reservoir and the cooling loop (see illustration).
- A tie strap must also be used around the hose where it crosses in the loop (see illustration).
Check that the new hose does not chafe against the engine mounting.
- Lower the car.
- Remove hose pliers.
Fill with hydraulic fluid.
Use hydraulic fluid according to the specifications in chart at the beginning of this Service Bulletin.
- Turn steering wheel from lock to lock several times. Top up fluid if required.
Bleed the system
Check oil level during bleeding.
- Apply the parking brake.
- Attach exhaust gases extraction unit to exhaust pipe.
- Start engine.
- A. Turn steering wheel slowly to the right. hold on full lock for 10 seconds.
- B. Turn steering wheel slowly to the left. hold on full lock for 10 seconds.
- C. Repeat operations A and B approx. 20 times. Move car after the operation has been carried out 10 times to avoid damage to the tires.
- Fill the reservoir with fluid if required.
Check for leaks
- Raise the car
- Check for leaks at the steering gear and the line connections.
- Replace the splashguard under the engine.
- Lower the car.
