Background:
A new cooling loop and a new return hose was introduced into production in February 1997. The hose has been positioned in a horizontal loop. The modification reduces the knocking sound at parking maneuvers.
The new modification can be used as a service solution on earlier model years. (see chassis number hereunder)

Knocking from servo system cooling loop
Replacing cooling loop and return line between steering gear and power steering reservoir hose
Replacing cooling loop
1
Block off the return hose to the reservoir with a hose plier/clamp.
Remove:
- splashguard under engine,
- hose clamps from connections on cooling loop,
- screws for the anti-roll bar bracket,
- cooling loop
Install new cooling loop.
Pull down the roll bar 5 mm (1/4") and insert the bracket for the loop between the frame rail and the anti-roll bar bracket.
Install screws for anti-roll bar bracket.
Replacing return line
2
Removing return line
Remove return line from steering gear.
3
Installing components
Install:
- new return line on front member,
- clamp (A). Do not tighten the screw.
- hose in a loop,
- clamp (B) on hose,
- holder (C) between the hoses,
- new oil return hose on cooling loop (D), with hose clamp,
- return line from power steering pump on cooling loop with hose clamp (F),
- holder between anti-roll bar and coolant pipe at (D) and (G) and between cooling loop and air conditioning (A/C) hose (E),
- splashguard under engine.
4
Installing return line on steering gear and finishing work.
Install return line on the steering gear. Use new aluminum washers. Tighten to 37 ft.lbs. (50 Nm) Tighten screw for clamp (A) according to previous illustration.
Rust-proof aluminum washers after installation. Rustproot washers on both the delivery pipe and return line. Use underseal spray, P/N 1381063-5.
5
Filling with oil and bleeding
Top up oil level in the servo reservoir and bleed the system. See other manual: Section 6, 7 (60, 61, 64, 72, 76, 77). Front end steering. 700/900 1982-, Procedure: CM8.
