RE:
Rear wheel balance, Multilink MK II rear axle 960 1995

REFERENCE: TP 6501201, SECTION 6 (65), MULTILINK MK II, REAR SUSPENSION, 960 1995-

SUPPORT ARM DIRT DEFLECTOR, RETROFIT

If dirt or snow collect on the inside of the rear wheels, it can cause unbalance. If a customer complains that the wheels are out of balance on cars with Multilink MK II rear suspension one solution is to install a dirt deflector on the support arm. This will prevent dirt from running into the inside of the wheel rim.

The dirt deflector is installed in production with effect from the following chassis numbers:

064-60643
065-22346

This service bulletin describes the method for installing the dirt deflector as a retrofit.

Materials: Dirt deflector, left side, P/N 9157651-2
Dirt deflector, right side, P/N 9157652-0
Plastic rivets, (2) P/N 9133417-7

The dirt deflectors and plastic rivets are ordered separately.

METHOD:

- Raise the car.

- Install the dirt deflector so that the guide on its inside is located in the grommet for the bushing to the stabilizer.

- Mark a hole for the plastic rivet on the support arm. Use the dirt deflector as a template.

NOTE:
Some cars already have a hole for the plastic rivet on the support arm. If the existing hole fits the hole in the dirt deflector it should be used, otherwise, drill a new hole.

- Remove the dirt deflector.

- Mark the site of the hole with a punch.

- Drill an 8 mm (5/16 in) diameter hole.

- Spray around the edges of the hole with an anti-corrosion agent.

- Install the dirt deflector. Note that the dirt deflectors are marked RH (right) and LH (left). It is important they are installed on the correct sides.

- Attach the dirt deflector to the support arm using plastic rivet P/N 9133417-7.

Clean any dirt or snow off the inside of the wheel rim.
