Test Drive Form, description
This form is a guide to road testing when checking customer complaints about the AW 50-42 automatic transmission. Please observe speed limits.
When test driving use the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to obtain different values and functions.
Initial status before test driving:
- Check oil level in the transmission before test driving.
- Program selector set to mode E (Economy).
Test driving
- Check operation of the park/neutral position (PNP) switch:
- Try to start the car with gear selector set to position P .
- Try to start the car when the gear selector is in a position other than P or N.
- Check gear selector positions:
- Check that the selector engages in each position, and that it does not try to jump out of the selected position.
- Checking reverse gear:
- Back up the car as usual, ensuring that the back-up (reversing) light comes on.
- Listen for mechanical noises:
- Start in position D . Drive the car so that the transmission shifts up and down. Listen for abnormal noises from the transmission. If you hear noises, interrupt test drive and return to the workshop. Fault-trace the relevant symptoms in the symptom desktop.
- Verify transmission function while driving:
Sport (S)
- Transmission should provide quicker downshifting. Refer to shift speeds in Pocket Data Booklet 850, 900/1996-.
Winter (W)
- Start in position D . The transmission should start in third gear and give a smooth take-up from standstill. Verify operation of kickdown. Refer to shift speeds in Pocket Data Booklet 850, 900/1996-.
Economy (E)
- Start in position D . Check gear speeds at the lowest possible throttle openings. Note also whether the gears slip or shifting is hard. Check that the lock-up function engages. Lock-up does not operate at a throttle opening of less than 4%.
- Start in position D . Depress accelerator pedal (AP) to kickdown position (wide open throttle (WOT)). After the shift from 1st to 2nd, reduce the throttle opening to just below the kickdown threshold (85% throttle opening). Check gear shifting speeds for the appropriate engine variant. Pocket Data Booklet 850, 900/1996-. Note also whether the gears slip or shifting is hard. Check that the lock-up function engages.
-
Hint: Slowly accelerate. Press gently on brake pedal, maintain throttle opening. Lock-up should disengage.
- Start in position D . Depress the accelerator pedal AP to kickdown position at different road speeds. Check the HIGHEST speed at which kickdown downshift occurs.
- Stop the car on a level road with the gear selector in position N , release the brake and depress accelerator pedal (AP) slightly. Does the car move forward?
- Start in position 3. Drive until third gear engages. Release accelerator pedal and check whether engine braking occurs in 1st gear. Move the lever to position L at higher speed and let the car slow down. Check the shifting points as the car slows.
- Start in position L. Increase speed and check whether engine braking occurs.
- Move the shift control to position P with the car stationary on an incline and release the brake. Does the car move?
