Front wheel bearing / hub, replacing

Raise the car. Remove the wheel
Remove the brake caliper mounting screws
Hang the caliper up using a piece of wire.
Knock the drive shaft lock up (early version)
Remove the nut
Use counterhold 999 5461 COUNTERHOLD 999 5461 Counterhold (4 wheel studs).
Use counterhold 999 5540 COUNTERHOLD 999 5540 Counterhold (5 wheel studs).
Remove counterhold and brake disc
Loosen the driveshaft end from the hub.
Knock the end of the drive shaft approximately 10-15 mm into the hub. Use a rubber or copper mallet.
Remove:
- the screw for the ball joint / wheel spindle
- the splashguard under the engine (earlier version).
Remove the control arm and ball joint from the wheel spindle
Pull the control arm down to expose the ball joint. Install protective socket 999 5562 PROTECTIVE SOCKET 999 5562 Protective Socket on the ball joint.
Note! If the ball joint is secured in the wheel spindle, see:.
Install holder 999 5563 to hold the control arm down
Press the drive shaft into its inner position. Bend out the spring strut. Remove the drive shaft from the hub
Be careful with the drive shaft boot.
Remove:
- the four screws (Torx E14) holding the hub to the wheel spindle
- the hub on the wheel spindle.
Clean:
- traces of metal adhesive from the splines on the drive shaft
- the pulse wheel for the ABS sensor.
Installation
Note! Ensure that the hub and wheel spindle mating surfaces are clean.
Install the new hub with new screws
Lightly tighten the screws crosswise. Then tighten to 65 Nm . Angle-tighten to 60° . Use bevel protractor 951 2050 BEVEL PROTRACTOR 951 2050 Bevel Protractor.
Install the drive shaft in the hub
Apply a 3-4 mm wide bead of metal adhesive (P/N 116137-0 ) around the outer section of the splines. See the illustration.
Fold out and turn the spring strut. Align the drive shaft in the hub.
Note! Be careful when installing the drive shaft in the wheel hub.
Install and finger-tighten the drive shaft nut
Early versions (M20): Use a new lubricated nut.
Late version (M22): . Install a new nut. Lubricate the nut.
Install the control arm on the wheel spindle
Remove the protective cover for the ball joint and the holder for the control arm.
Note! Do not damage the ball joint boot.
Install:
- the ball joint / control arm onto the wheel spindle. Check that the groove on the ball joint spindle lines up with the screw hole in the wheel spindle. Use a new lock nut. Tighten to 50 Nm
- the splashguard under the engine (earlier version).
Install the brake disc
Ensure that mating surfaces are clean. Tighten the brake disc locating pin. Tighten to 8 Nm .
Install counterhold
Use counterhold 999 5461 COUNTERHOLD 999 5461 Counterhold (4 wheel studs).
Use counterhold 999 5540 COUNTERHOLD 999 5540 Counterhold (5 wheel studs).
Tighten the drive shaft nut. Tighten to 120 Nm. Angle-tighten 60°
Use bevel protractor 951 2050 BEVEL PROTRACTOR 951 2050 Bevel Protractor.
Remove the counterhold.
Early version lock nut M20: Knock down the nut locking flange into the groove on the drive shaft.
Late version lock nuts M22 are self-locking.
Install:
- brake caliper, use new screws. Tighten to 100 Nm .
Install the wheel:
Lubricate the hub guide. Use rustproofing agent, P/N 1161030-0 .
Tighten the studs lightly. Then tighten crosswise. Tighten to 110 Nm .
