Convertible Top: Description and Operation: Overview
Overview
General
The control module has a built-in diagnostic system, Volvo on-board diagnostic (OBD) system II, which continuously monitors itself and its input and output signals. The control module designation is the convertible top control unit.
Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)
The control module will store a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) if it detects a fault. The control module can store up to 34 diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
If for some reason a fault disappears after the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) has been permanently stored in the control module, information about the fault is stored in the control module (the exception is diagnostic trouble code (DTC) CCU-210 - no vehicle speed signal).
Reading off the Volvo on-board diagnostic (OBD) system
Fault data and other information can be read off using the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) connected to the data link connector (DLC) under the center console cover. The Volvo Scan Tool (ST) communicates with control module via a standardized interface.
Volvo on-board diagnostic (OBD) system
Using the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) it is possible to:
- read off and erase stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
- calibrate the soft-top and the control module.
- continuously monitor the value and status of input and output signals.
- activate certain functions.
- program the control module with certain information.
- read off control module identification.
To activate the Volvo on-board diagnostic (OBD) system:
- ignition on.
- normal battery voltage.
Connecting the Volvo Scan Tool (ST)
The following operations are required to connect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST):
- ignition off.
- install the memory cassette.
- connect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) wiring to the data link connector (DLC). This is located under the center console cover.
- ignition on.
- power up the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
- select language, car and group of functions using a multi-function menu.
- select the system required using a multi-function menu.
- select function from another multi-function menu:
- select DIAGNOSTIC TEST to read and erase diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and to activate functions.
- select MONITOR TEST to continuously read off the values and status of control module input and output signals.
- select READ CM: ID to read off the control module P/N.
Reading and erasing diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)
Stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) can be read off and erased using this function. The on-board diagnostic (OBD) system can identify several types of fault in the form of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
DTC table Convertible system see DTC table Convertible system Convertible Top Control Unit (CCU).
Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) can only be erased when all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) have been read at least once.
Reading off input and output signals
Using this function, the values and status of the control module input and output signals can be continuously read off.
The following parameters can be read off:
- Battery voltage.
- Power supply to position sensor.
- Position sensor.
- Micro-switch status.
For further information about parameters, see Convertible system signal specification Convertible System Signal Specification.
Activating components / functions
Components / functions in the convertible system can be activated using this option.
The following components can be activated:
- Soft-top left / right motor.
- Tensioner rib left / right motor.
- Lock cover motor.
- Rear locking arms.
- Front soft top roof locking.
For further information about activation, see Activating components and functions Activating Components and Functions.
Calibrating and programming data
This option calibrates the soft top roof for fault free operation. The soft top roof sensor values must be programmed and calibrated when replacing / adjusting the soft-top, and replacing the control module or potentiometer. There is a special routine which must be followed when calibrating and programming, see Programming and calibrating the convertible system Programming and Relearning.
Reading off the control module identification
The Volvo Scan Tool (ST) identifies control modules by reading off a code from the control module memory.
This code contains information about the control module P/N
