Replacing Rear Wheel Hub/Stub Axle






Replacing rear wheel hub/stub axle

Special tools:
999 2861 SOCKET 999 2861 Socket

Remove wheel






Remove:
- brake pipes from mounting clip on rear axle
- three-way junction from trailing arm.

Note! Applies to left-hand side only.

Remove brake caliper screws
Hang caliper up with a piece of wire.

Release the parking brake brake shoes adjuster






Remove:
- locating pin
- the brake disc
- cap
- hub nut, see
- the hub.

Note! If only replacing rear wheel hub continue to Rear wheel hub, replacing Rear Wheel Hub, Replacing.

Replacing stub axle

Remove ABS system sensor





Note! Do not disconnect sensor connector.

Remove parking brake shoes

Remove




- brake cable screw in the backing plate and remove the bracket for the cable guide sleeve (applies to early versions only)
- the four brake backing plate screws and brake shoe springs
- the brake backing plate.

Early version (cable sleeve with loose guide sleeve on end piece)




Pull the guide sleeve forward on the cable. Be careful with the protective cover

Remove the cable from the parking brake segment. Remove segment

New version (cable sleeve with fixed plastic guide sleeve to end piece)

Remove:




- cigarette lighter panel (2 screws).

Note! On certain versions, remove data link connector (DLC) the from panel

- cover plate under parking brake lever

Cars with manual transmission:
Remove gear shift lever boot from center console. Do this by pressing on the rear part of the boot from underneath via the hole under the parking brake lever.

All variants

Remove:
- center console locker cover
- center console. Remove center console connectors. Remove screws (x4) and remove the console.

Remove the cable from the parking brake




Remove the circlip from the cable segment. Remove the segment from the axle and cable.

Pull out the cable and remove the parking brake segment from the cable. Be careful with the cables protective cover






Remove the four screws holding the stub axle end piece






New version

Hold the stub axle while removing the screws
Undo parking brake cable from stub axle end piece by bending cable cover sleeve up and down a little.

Remove stub axle

Installation




Ensure that surfaces on the trailing arm and stub axle end piece are clean before installing

New version
Check that O-ring on cable cover sleeve is OK. Press cover sleeve into stub axle end piece

Install stub axle




Use new screws. Tighten the screws crosswise to 35 Nm (25.82 lb.ft) and angle tighten 60 degrees . Use a protractor 951 2050 BEVEL PROTRACTOR 951 2050 Bevel Protractor.

Early version




Check that parking brake cable O-rings and guide sleeve are OK

Connect brake cable to the segment

Install cable guide sleeve into stub axle end piece

New version

Connect brake cable to the segment




Insert the cable in the sleeve.

Connect the segment to the cable. Install the segment on the axle and lever. Install the circlip, ensure that the circlip is in its track






Install:




- center console with the 4 screws
- connectors (black, gray)
- center console locker cover
- cover plate under parking brake lever

Note! Only on cars with manual transmission Attach gearshift boot by hooks at the front of the center console. Press snap fasteners on sides and at back together. All variants. Install cigarette lighter panel. Note! On certain versions, install data link connector (DLC) in panel.

Install gasket between stub axle end piece and brake backing plate






Install:
- backing plate with brake shoe springs. Tighten the upper screws to 25 Nm (18.44 lb.ft) and the lower ones to 20 Nm (14.75 lb.ft).
- brake cable bracket in backing plate, early versions only.

Install the brake shoes and adjuster






Clean and install the ABS sensor
Use a soft brush for cleaning
Install the ABS sensor. Applies only if stub axle is changed. Tighten to 10 Nm (7.4 lb.ft).

Replacing pulse wheel




Press pulse wheel off from hub
Use drift 999 5351 PUNCH 700 ABS/REPLACE REAR WHEEL HUB/STUB AXLE 999 5351 Punch 700 ABS/Replace Rear Wheel Hub/Stub Axle , distance 999 5350 PRESS TOOL 999 5350 Press Tool and counterhold 999 5340 COUNTERHOLD 999 5340 Counterhold.

Installing




Press in pulse wheel
Use drift 999 5351 PUNCH 700 ABS/REPLACE REAR WHEEL HUB/STUB AXLE 999 5351 Punch 700 ABS/Replace Rear Wheel Hub/Stub Axle and counterhold 999 2861 SOCKET 999 2861 Socket. Ensure that the pulse wheel is straight onto the hub.

Check pulse wheel position during installation. See dimensions in illustration, 49 ± 0.5 mm

Install hub




Ensure shaft journal is clean.
Use a new nut. Tighten the screws to 120 Nm (88.5 lb.ft). Angle tighten 30° . Use a protractor 951 2050 BEVEL PROTRACTOR 951 2050 Bevel Protractor. Check that there is no play in the bearing after installation.

Install cap
Use drift 999 5225 PUNCH 999 5225 Punch.

Ensure that mating surfaces on the disc and hub flange are clean






Install the disc and locating pin
Tighten locating pin to 10 Nm (7.4 lb.ft).

Adjust parking brake
Adjust brake shoes outwards until the brake disc cannot be turned. Then slacken off the adjustment four-six notches.

Install brake caliper




Use new screws. Tighten to 60 Nm (44.25 lb.ft).

Install brake pipe to mounting clip. Install the three-way junction on the left hand side

Install wheel
Install wheel studs lightly. Tighten crosswise to 110 Nm (81.1 lb.ft).
