Introduction
Safety equipment
Seat belts
The front seat belts are three point harnesses equipped with pyrotechnic seat belt tensioners and strength limiters.
The seatbelt goes from the seat belt reel through a D ring link which is secured to the upper part of the B post. There is a washer between the bodywork and the link, these two components are separate components and are not integrated with the seatbelt.
The lower seatbelt mountings for the front seat belts are the same as those in the C70 Coupe.
The rear seat belts are three point harnesses equipped with pyrotechnic seat belt tensioners. The seat belt reels are located in the center of the "parcel shelf".
Airbag
An airbag is standard on the driver's side.
The passenger side airbag is standard or an option depending on the market.
A SIPS airbag is standard in the front seats.
SRS Diagnostic system
Five new SRS diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) have been introduced for the rear seat belt tensioners. If diagnostic trouble code (DTC) 112 is displayed during the warranty period it should not be erased. The control module should be returned.
ROPS components
There are a number of units in the ROPS system, these are:
- ROPS cassettes.
- The control module for the ROPS system. The control module is located behind the left cassette.
- There is a warning lamp for the ROPS system in the combined instrument panel. When the ignition is switched on the lamp lights for five seconds and then goes out (self out).
ROPS function (Roll Over Protection System)
ROPS is a safety system in which two protective roll bars automatically shoot up when the car rolls.
They are located behind the rear head restraints.
The roll bars are covered by two removable covers.
The roll bars are spring loaded.
The sensor activates the solenoid which in turn affects a catch. When the catch is released the roll bars are pressed up by the springs. The roll bars automatically in the up position and cannot be pushed down.
To reset the roll bars, press "reverse catch" by hand and then the roll bars down to normal position.
The control module contains three different sensor modules. Two of the sensor modules are levels (a glass holder filled with liquid except an air bubble, similar to a spirit level). The two levels are located on the right and left hand sides of the control module. They are located at an angle of 56 degrees reckoned from horizontal. This means that a roll can be detected on both sides.
The levels are also located with a lengthwise lean of 18 degrees in order to sense any forward tipping. When the lean exceeds 72 degrees the roll bars are activated.
The third sensor module consists of a spring equipped with a weight at the top. When the car rolls upside down the spring stretches and the weight comes into contact with a contact surface which completes a circuit and activates the roll bars. This sensor module senses rolling during so called "free flight", that is when the car is slowly turning in the air. The sensor module also senses rapid movement changes in the car. This means that the roll bars can be activated in conditions other than a collision resulting in a roll.
The ROPS system has a reserve power unit which stores energy for 5 seconds after power has disappeared. The roll bars are activated when the car has more than 40 degrees of roll. The roll bars are activated in less than 0.2 seconds.
To avoid accidental activation of the roll bars a transportation fuse can be activated with the Volvo Scan Tool (ST). If the car is tipped to a position where there is a risk that the roll bars can be deployed, (for example when transporting the car) it can be secured by going into the parameter list with the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) and activating the transport fuse.
ROPS Diagnostics
The ROPS control module is connected to the data link connector (DLC). ROPS is under the group 8 menu.
The following functions are in the ROPS menu:
- Diagnostic Test Mode (DTM)
- Monitor test
- Control module identification.
There is a sub menu Activation in the diagnostic test mode (DTM). This menu has 5 activation functions, two of the functions require passwords.
There are 6 parameters under the Monitor test menu.
The ROPS system has 14 diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
