VGLA - Introduction Design

What Is VGLA?

VGLA is short for Volvo Guard Lock and Alarm system. The system has a control module containing all the hardware and software necessary to control the lock and alarm functions and courtesy light. The system wiring is fully integrated with the car's ordinary wire harness.

The model of car, market (legal - insurance - market requirements) and customer options determine the control module's components and programming. The control module has Volvo diagnostics and is connected to the car's diagnostic test point. Programming is one of the things that can be changed via the diagnostic test point (eg after fitting extra sensors for the alarm).

Central Locking System, Alarm

Central locking is standard.
Alarms are standard/optional/accessory depending on the market.
The market determines which components and functions (programmable) are included. The alarm can be activated/deactivated using the remote control, some markets also have a key (programmable).

Remote Control

Remote control is standard on all cars with alarms. On cars with only central locking, remote control is standard/optional/accessory depending on the market. Two remote controls are included, one more can be programmed.
The remote control/receiver works on different frequencies depending on the market (legal requirement). The remote control works on rotating codes and has a range of about 5-10 meters. It contains separate buttons to lock and unlock the car and to unlock the boot/tailgate. Some remote controls (depending on the Market) also have a panic button to trigger the alarm.

Internal Switches

All designs have switches in both front doors to lock/unlock the central locking system. A switch in the driver's door to open the boot/tailgate and petrol cover lid.

Type Of Locking System

There are three different designs of locking system:
'normal' system.
with blocked locking position.
with two step unlocking.
The type of locking system fitted to the car as standard depends on the market. Programming can be changed however (choice of locking system).

NOTE! The locks in the side doors are unique to cars with 'blocked locking position'.

Other Changes To The Locking System

New locks in side doors and boot/tailgate:
new designs for linkage, central locking motors, etc.
cable between the lock and interior doorhandles.
Strengthened release type lock cylinders.
If excessive torque is applied to the lock cylinder it rotates without affecting the lock, eg someone trying to 'unlock' the car using the wrong key or a screwdriver (essentially the same function as on S40/V40 and 960 1997- ).
The lock cylinder in the passenger door has been discontinued.
