Installation




1. Install/reconnect:
a. Lower universal joint to steering gear. Tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
b. locking spring.





2. Install steering shaft boot (gaiter):
a. Lubricate needle bearing in boot with low-temperature grease, P/N 1161417-9 (30 g).
b. Fold back upper section of boot (gaiter).
c. Lubricate inner face of lower section with soapy water.





3. Fit lower section of boot (gaiter) around metal collar in firewall (bulkhead) panel, ensuring good seal all round.
4. Lubricate inner side of locking ring with soapy water.





5. Press ring into position against firewall (bulkhead) around lower section of boot (gaiter). Upper section should remain folded back.





6. Fold down upper section of boot (gaiter) to seat against locking ring flange, ensuring good contact all round.





7. Install steering column mounting and steering shaft. Install mounting bolts (1). Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
8. Ensure that steering shaft splines are clean. Reconnect steering shaft to universal joint (2). Tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). Install locking spring.

NOTE: Lubricate steering shaft splines and steering column mounting with low-temperature grease, P/N 1161417-9 (30 g). Lubrication is important to prevent noise from steering column.





9. Install steering column:
a. Lubricate splines with low-temperature grease, P/N 1161417-9 (30 g).
b. Counterhold steering shaft and guide steering column into mounting and onto steering shaft.

NOTE: Take care to ensure that spring clip in mounting is not displaced when installing column.

10. Center column in dashboard opening. Install column adjuster bracket washers and nuts. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).





11. Install/reconnect:
a. Ignition switch with key turned to position I. Depress locking tab and install switch.
b. Ignition switch connector.





12. Install/reconnect:
a. Turn signal and windshield wiper levers (stalks).
b. Connector clip.
c. Connectors.
d. Wiring harness.





13. Install contact reel, tighten to 2.5 Nm (1.8 ft. lbs.). Reconnect connector. Ensure that locking tabs are engaged securely and that rubber cap is in position. Secure wire with two clips.





14. Install key lock cable (certain variants):
a. Turn ignition key to position I or II.
b. Press cable into switch, ensuring that locking tabs grip securely.





15. Install knee bolster (certain variants). Tighten nuts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).





16. Install:
a. Panel under steering wheel.
b. Steering column covers.





17. Zero contact reel. Rotate contact reel carefully to right-hand limit and back two complete turns to left. Continue to rotate until reel can be locked in 1 o'clock position as illustrated.





18. Lock contact reel in position with screw. Coat slip ring surface with thin layer of low-temperature grease, P/N 1161417-9.





19. Install steering wheel:

NOTE: Ensure that front wheels are pointing straight ahead.

a. Pass contact reel wire through steering wheel.
b. Install steering wheel carefully until both catches on contact reel are seated in recesses in steering wheel hub. Install and finger-tighten steering wheel bolt.

CAUTION: Do not turn steering wheel when mounted on steering shaft. Since contact reel is locked, it will be damaged beyond repair if wheel is turned in this situation.

c. Remove contact reel locking screw and insert in "parking hole".
d. Connect tool 998 8695 to contact reel wire.





20. Reconnect battery ground cable. Drive car straight forward and check that steering wheel is in "straight-ahead" position.
21. proceed as follows if steering wheel alignment is incorrect:
a. Remove: tool 998 8695 and steering wheel (carefully).
b. Zero and lock contact reel.
c. Install steering wheel. Check again.





22. When steering wheel is correctly aligned:
a. Tighten center bolt to 40 Nm (29 ft. lbs.).
b. Ensure that SRS lamp is extinguished i.e. that no Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) is present.





23. Switch off ignition.
24. Disconnect battery ground cable and tool 998 8695.





25. Install steering wheel airbag module:

NOTE: Battery ground cable must be disconnected.

a. Turn ignition key to position I to release steering wheel.
b. Position lower section of steering wheel module against wheel (1).
c. Reconnect connector (2).
d. Swing module into position (3), ensuring that cable is free and not pinched.
e. Secure module by tightening Torx screws from rear. Insert right-hand screw first. Turn wheel to gain access to screws.
f. Tighten screws to 10 Nm (7.4 ft. lbs.).
26. Check operation. Ensure that steering wheel turns easily and that steering lock is working properly.





27. Final check. Proceed as follows when all components have been installed and tightened in passenger compartment. First switch on ignition, then reconnect battery ground cable.

WARNING: Ensure that nobody is in car when reconnecting battery.





28. Check DTCs (if any):
a. Record DTCs. DTCs may be stored if steering wheel module was removed before ignition was switched on.
b. Erase DTCs.
c. Check that no new DTCs have been stored. If necessary, correct fault(s) and erase DTCs as instructed.
