Removal
CAUTION: The battery must be disconnected when removing or installing the steering wheel airbag module.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Insert ignition key and turn to position I to release steering lock.
3. Remove steering wheel airbag module.
a. Undo Torx screws (two) at rear of steering wheel. Turn wheel through 90° in each direction to gain access to screws.
b. Disconnect connector and lift out module.
4. Remove screw from "parking hole" in steering wheel. Screw must remain attached to plastic strip.
5. Remove steering wheel bolt. Ensure that front wheels and steering wheel are in straight-ahead position. Lift off wheel. Take care to ensure that neither connector nor plastic strip and screw catch in steering wheel during removal.
6. Remove:
- steering column covers. Use long Torx TX15 tool for upper cover and Torx TX25 for lower cover.
- panel under dashboard.
7. Remove knee bolster (certain variants).
8. Disconnect key lock cable (certain variants) Turn ignition key to position I. Use flat nose pliers to compress cable locking tabs.
9. Remove SRS contact reel (mounted with three screws).
a. Unhook SRS cable clip.
b. Disconnect cable from contact reel.
c. Place contact reel to one side.
10. Remove/disconnect:
a. turn signal and windshield wiper levers (stalks).
b. ignition switch connector.
c. connector clip.
d. Wiring harness at underside of steering column.
11. Remove ignition switch:
a. Insert ignition key in switch.
b. Turn key to position I.
c. Depress locking tab using 2 mm (0.079 inch) drift.
12. Remove:
a. Nuts (two) and washers from steering column adjuster bracket.
b. Steering column from car.
13. Remove:
a. Set bolt in lower half of upper universal joint (2).
b. Steering shaft.
c. Steering column mounting bolts (1).
14. Remove steering shaft boot (gaiter) and needle bearing:
a. Fold back upper section of boot.
b. Remove locking ring and boot with bearing.
15. Disconnect lower universal joint from steering gear.
