Steering column, knocking sound
Background:
A knocking or grinding sound may be beard from the steering column when driving on uneven surfaces, when turning and/or at start-up and stop.
This may have been caused by the locating pin on the Hardy disc catching in its bushing. Therefore a service solution has been developed, whereby the Hardy disc, wing screw and flanged nut must be replaced.
A running change has been introduced in production from the following chassis number:

Remove soundproofing panel (1).

Position the wheels straight ahead.
Mark the position as shown in the illustration (A). Turn the steering wheel so that one of the bolts for the coupling disc (D) is accessable and remove the bolt and nut.
Turn back the steering wheel to its first position and remove the other bolt (D) and nut for the coupling disc.
Remove:
- Shoulder bolt (B).
- The two bolts and nuts (C).
- The coupling disc.

Install new Hardy disc
Remove transport protection from locating pin. Lubricate entire locating pin (E) with grease from service kit.
Install sleeves (2xF) and (2xG).

Install
- Hardy disc
- Check steering shaft position (A).
- Shoulder bolt and nut loosely.
- Screw, new washer and nut (C). Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft.lbs).
- Unlock steering wheel lock
- Screw, new washer and nut (D). Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft.lbs).
- Tighten wing screw and nut (8) to 35 Nm (26 ft.lbs).

Install soundproofing panel.
WARRANTY STATEMENT: Warranty may be submitted under the new car factory warranty when their is a documented customer complaint, using claim type 01.
