Fault-Tracing Overview

1. Read Description and Operation:
- If unsure about the function of the automatic transmission see Description and Operation. Description and Operation
- Then continue with step 2

2. Read the safety, warnings and general information:
- Ignition and high tension components. Technician Safety Information
- Towing, radio, battery, cleanliness and control modules. Vehicle Damage Warnings
- Abbreviations. Abbreviations Used In Testing Procedures
- Then continue with step 3.

3. Use a suitable "AW50 42 Diagnostics and Checklist" form:
- Get out the "AW50-42 Diagnostics and Check List" and fill in information about the car and the fault.
Make note of any information supplied by the customer.
Read off and note down Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
If communication cannot be established with the Volvo, or equivalent, Scan Tool (ST), refer to Checking Communication With The Transmission Control Module (TCM), under Electrical Testing.
- Are there DTCs stored?
Yes, then continue with step 4
No, then continue with step 5
4. Remedy fault:
- Carry out fault-tracing. Automatic Transmission (AT)
- Erase diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Clearing Trouble Codes
- Test drive the car use a suitable test drive Form. Test Drive Form
- If a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) has been stored. Automatic Transmission (AT)
- Do the fault symptoms persist?
Yes, then continue with step 5
No, then continue with step 8
5. Remedy mechanical faults
- Test drive the car. Test Drive Form
Note signs of any faults.
- For symptoms and corrective action, refer to Mechanical Malfunction Symptom Table. Testing and Inspection
- Does the fault symptom persist?
Yes, then continue with step 6
No, then continue with step 8





6. Connecting the test box
- Ignition off.
- Connect the test box and check ground terminals. Connecting the Test Box
- Then continue with step 7
7. Checking terminals:
- Take readings on all terminals. Signal Description
- Then continue with step 8
8. Conclusion:
- Check that no DTCs have been stored for the automatic transmission, fuel injection system, injection system or combined instrument panel.
- Always erase any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) when fault-tracing or repair work is completed.
