General Information
Torques
Torque specifications presented in articles and in tables indicate settings for components that must be tightened in a specified manner, i.e. tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft lb) or tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft lb) plus 90° for components that should be tightened with a torque wrench, then angle tightened.
Thread Repair
- In most cases, damaged threads can be repaired using thread inserts.
NOTE: Damage to conical threads = Replace component.
Coolant
- The only coolant covered by a Volvo warranty is genuine Volvo coolant diluted 50/50 with pure water. This mixture helps prevent corrosion and freezing.
- The coolant does not normally need changing, except when the cooling system has been drained, when the engine is being repaired for example.
- Use only type C when changing coolant.
Battery/Radio
- Do not remove battery leads when the engine is running.
- Remove battery leads when boost charging.
- When jump starting the engine do not use a higher supply than 15 A and 16 V.
Radio with microprocessor:
- To avoid damage to radio microprocessors the radio should be switched off before the battery negative lead is removed.
Impact Wrench
- Impact wrenches must not be used on bolted joints with aluminum threads.
- There is a risk of threads damage.
Suspended Engine
WARNING: When working on a suspended engine lifting equipment must be properly secured and in perfect condition.
Liquid Gasket Compound
- When applying liquid gasket compound to the engine, liquid gasket compound part No. 1 161 059-9, or equivalent should be used, e.g. between the upper and lower sections of the cylinder head.
- It is essential that surfaces are properly cleaned and any oil film removed before applying new gasket compound.
- Apply gasket compound with a short-haired roller tool No. 951 1205, or equivalent, covering well but not overflowing.
Cylinder Head Machining
NOTE: Only machine off cracks and corrosion damage on cylinder head mating surfaces with cylinder block if cylinder head is level.
