Cylinder Block Assembly: Description and Operation

ENGINE CONSTRUCTION, ENGINE BLOCK
The engine block is made up of three sections, the cylinder block, intermediate section and oil sump. The cylinder block and intermediate section are mated along the center line of the crankshaft.

The cylinder block has five cast iron cylinder liners cast into the cylinder block which cannot be replaced. The 2.5 litre engine liner thicknesses are 2 mm.

The six main bearing seats have cast iron reinforcements cast into the intermediate section.

The oil way that distributes oil to the main bearings and to the big ends via the crankshaft, is cast into the top of the intermediate section.

The oil sump contributes to the rigid design of the unit and provides extra reinforcement.
