Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Steering: Testing and Inspection

Note! The car must be lowered when the work is carried out.

Preparations

- Place paper over the Generator (GEN) as protection against oil
- Push the coolant hose to the control module to one side
- Install lock grip pliers on the power steering pump return hose.

Connect test instrument

- Connect instrument 999 5055 between the pump and the steering gear pressure hose
- Use nipples 999 5175 and 999 5319
- Connect nipple 999 5175 with the pipe screw and washers from nipple 999 5319.

Note! Connect the pipe from the instrument cock to the pressure pipe for the steering gear. The cock should be parallel with the hose.

Remove

- lock grip pliers
- paper over the Generator (GEN).
- Position the manometer in the engine compartment so that it can be read off from the driver's seat.
- Remove the battery negative lead
- Remove the steering wheel module with the two torx screws on the reverse of steering wheel

- Disconnect the connector. Lift out the entire steering wheel module.

- Install tool 998 8695 instead of the steering wheel module. The tool is used to prevent a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) being stored when the engine is started
- Install the battery negative lead.

Checking balance when turning wheel to right
- Start the engine
- Turn the steering wheel to almost the right limit position
- Connect torque wrench 999 8081 to the steering wheel screw

- Turn the torque wrench slowly to the right. Read off the torque just as the manometer reaches 1.2 MPa (12 kp/cm).

Note! It is extremely important to read off the torque just as the manometer displays 1.2 MPa because the pressure remains even if the throne reduces.

Checking the balance when turning the steering wheel to the left

- Turn the wheel nearly to the left limit position. Read off the torque in the same way as for the right-hand side.

Interpreting the torque measurements
- The torque must be between 3.2 - 4.2 Nm (32 - 42 kp/cm). The reading must not deviate by more than 0.7 Nm (7 kp/cm) between the right and left-hand sides.

Note! If deviation is greater the steering gear must be replaced.

Checking pump pressure

Left limit position
- Start the engine
- Turn the steering wheel to the left and press it to the limit position for a maximum of 10 seconds while reading off the manometer
- Correct pressure: 10.2 - 11 MPa.
Right limit position
- Turn the steering wheel to the right limit position and read the manometer according to the previous operation.
The pump capacity

- Shut the cock for a maximum of 10 seconds. If the pump is not faulty the manometer pressure should rise to the correct value: 10.2 - 11 MPa
- If the pressure lies outside the above values: Recondition or replace the pump
- Switch off the engine.

Disconnecting the measuring instrument
Remove
- the battery negative lead
- tool 998 8695.
Place the bottom section of the steering wheel module on the steering wheel (1).
Connect the connector (2).
Fold in steering wheel module (3). Install the torx screws. Tighten to 10 Nm.
Check that nothing is trapped and that the steering wheel module is correctly secured.

- Install lock grip pliers on the oil pump return hose.

Note! Place paper over the Generator (GEN) as protection against oil.

- Disconnect the test instrument and the nipples
- Connect the pressure hose to the pump. Use a new O-ring.
Remove
- lock grip pliers
- the paper over the Generator (GEN).
Install
- the coolant pipe for the control module.
