Cylinder Head Assembly: Description and Operation
Engine Construction, Cylinder Head
The entire engine is made of aluminum. The body of the unit is made up of five sections, the cylinder head consisting of two and the engine block of three sections.
The seal between the cylinder head and engine block is a conventional cylinder head gasket, while liquid gaskets are used in other joints.
There is a cover over the spark plug wells to protect against dirt and water.
Each of the two camshafts is supported in six bearing caps integral to the two halves of the cylinder head.
The upper half of the cylinder head functions as a combined valve cover and camshaft cover. Oil ways cast in the underside of this ensure lubrication of the camshafts and hydraulic tappets.
The maintenance-free hydraulic tappets, valve springs and valves are located on the lower half.
The compact "pent-roof" combustion chamber design and V configuration of the valves provide optimum rapid charging and direct (cross-flow) scavenging of the combustion chamber.
The combustion chamber squish surfaces and the central spark plug give optimum charge combustion, low knock susceptibility and low, stable exhaust emissions.
