Steering Column: Description and Operation
Consisting of the steering shaft, steering lock and steering wheel adjuster (for rake and height), the steering column is an integral unit protected by an outer tube. The steering wheel rake is infinitely variable. while the wheel can also be raised and lowered by ± 20 mm (0.79 inch). Rake adjustment is afforded by the universal joint in the upper section of the steering shaft. Both the rake and height are adjusted by means of a lever to the left of the column, immediately under the wheel. Most of the steering column, as well as the upper section of the steering shaft, is made of aluminum. The steering column incorporates a collapsible coupling which ensures that the lower section of the steering shaft collapses in the event of a collision. The steering column must be replaced as a complete unit.
