Passenger Air Bag SRS

1
Safety precautions

Note!
Work with your body and head outside the range of the airbag until a ground lead is connected between the airbag and a ground terminal on the cylinder head.

2
Connecting temporary ground lead to the cylinder head

Connect the temporary ground lead (P/N 9511522) to one of the ground terminals on the upper section of the cylinder head (as illustrated).

Note!
The other end of the ground lead will later be connected to the airbag container inside the car.

3
Removing the glove compartment

Remove the screws holding the glove compartment. (6x Torx 25).

Remove the glove compartment.

4
Removing the soundproofing panel

Remove the screws holding the soundproofing panel (2 x Torx 25).

Separate the connector for the courtesy lighting.

Remove the soundproofing panel.

5
Connecting the temporary ground lead to the airbag

Connect the free end of the temporary ground lead to the nut (1) on the face of the airbag that points toward the interior of the car (as illustrated).

Warning!
Make sure the ground clamp is securely clamped to the nut flange (two arrows). Test by carefully pulling on the ground lead.

6
Connecting a permanent ground lead to ground terminal

Remove the existing screw at the ground terminal 31/15 (RHD 31/7).

Take a new screw and the permanent ground lead from the kit. Secure one end of the permanent ground lead, together with the disconnected wiring, to the same ground terminal.

Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft lb.)

7

Note!
Looking from underneath it is much easier to find the grounding terminal. Look for the black and brown wiring and follow it to the end.

8
Removing the screw in the airbag

Remove the outer screw (the screw nearest the passenger door, see illustration) holding the airbag.

9
Pre installing the stud

Take out the stud and one of the nuts supplied in the kit.

The center section of the stud is not threaded. The threaded section is longer on one end of the stud. Screw the nut into place on the longer threaded section.

Screw the nut all the way to the bottom of the thread. Torque to 5 Nm (4 ft lb.).

10
Hint: Hold the unthreaded section of the stud with a vise grip while tightening the nut.

Note!
To achieve correct torque, it is very important to leave a gap (A) between the vise grip and the nut.

11
Installing the stud in the airbag

Install the stud where the previously removed screw was located. Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft lb.).

12
Connecting permanent ground strip to the stud

Install the free end of the permanent ground lead on the stud and point it toward the passenger door.

Secure the ground lead with the remaining nut from the kit.

Torque to 10 Nm (7 ft lb.).

13
Securing the permanent ground lead

Secure the ground lead to the existing cable harness in the upper / outer corner of the glove compartment (see illustration).

Secure the ground lead as high up as possible. Remove the temporary ground lead from between the airbag and cylinder head.

14
Reinstall the soundproofing panel

Install the soundproofing panel.

Connect the courtesy lighting connector.

Screw the soundproofing panel into place.

15
Reinstall the glove compartment

Install and screw the glove compartment into place. Check that the inner glove compartment mounting is correctly positioned.

Start the car and check that no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) have been stored (the SRS-lamp should go out after starting).
