Rear Suspension

Multi-Link Rear Suspension

Delta Link suspension used on the other models will not allow the installation of a propeller shaft or drive shafts. For this reason a new rear wheel suspension has been developed for the Volvo AWD.
Multi Link independent rear suspension is used. This is same as the suspension used on the 960 but has oil springs rather then a leaf spring.
It consists of a rear axle member made up of upper and lower sections. These are joined to each other with screwed joints. The upper and lower sections of the rear axle member are in cast aluminum. The final drive is mounted between the members. The member is mounted on the side-members of the car body.

Rear Wheel Suspension

- Two section rear axle member cast in aluminum. The member is mounted directly into the side-members with screws.
- The final drive with torque tube is rubber mounted between the rear axle upper and lower sections at the it is rubber mounted to a bracket on the car body.
- The camber angle is changed by the action of the upper and lower control arms. The camber angle cannot be adjusted.
The upper control arms are in forged steel and the lower control arms are in cast aluminum. The control arms have rubber bushings and are mounted on the rear axle member and wheel bearing housing with serrated screws. These screws have a push fit and no play in them.
- The track rod controls toe-in. The toe-in angle can be adjusted with eccentric screws in the mountings.
- Front-rear forged steel support arm rubber mounted at the front on brackets screwed to the car body. The rear end of the support arms are rubber mounted to the lower control arms. The support arm absorbs forces from the coil springs mounted between the rear axle member and the lower control arms.
- Shock absorbers with automatic level control are standard.
The shock absorbers are rubber mounted between the rear axle member and the lower control arms.
- The anti-roll bar is mounted on the rear axle member and at the front by links to the lower control arms.
