Replacing the Pinion Seal For the Bevel Gear
NOTE: Check that the parking brake is not set and that no gear is engaged.NOTE: Special tools: 998 7693, 999 5069, 999 5304, 999 5504, 999 5561, 999 5652, 999 5653
Marking Propeller Shaft - Flange
- Mark propeller shaft CV joint in relation to bevel gear flange.
- Remove propeller shaft screws
- Use counterhold 999 5561. Modify counterhold according to Workshop Guide.
Removing Propeller Shaft Bracket And Cross-member Screws
- Remove two propeller shaft center bearing bracket screws from member (removed in illustration).
- Remove left member screws. Remove right screws (removed in illustration).
- Push the propeller shaft to the right, tie it at the front and let it rest on the member.
Removing Bevel Gear Flange Nuts
- Mark flange In relation to the end of the pinion. Remove nut
- Use counterhold 999 5652.
Removing Pinion Flange And Spacer Sleeve
Remove:
- flange. Use puller 999 5304.
- pinion spacer sleeve. Use puller 998 7693 or universal puller
- Use container to collect oil spillage
Removing Seal
- Use puller 999 5069.
NOTE: Check that no seal residue is left. Check that sealing face on pinion spacer sleeve is OK.
Installing Seal
- Lubricate sealing ring lip with wheel bearing grease, P/N 1161241-3. Install seal on drift 999 5653 on the side of the tool marked 1155.
- Press in seal
- Use press tool 999 5504.
Installing Pinion Spacer Sleeve And Flange
- Install pinion spacer sleeve and flange as marked If necessary use press tool 999 5504.
Installing New Nut For Flange
- Install a new lubricated nut, there must be no axial play.
- Tighten to 180-200 Nm (132.8-147.6 ft.lb.). Use counterhold 999 5652.
NOTE: Do not exceed a tightening torque of 200 Nm (147.6 ft.lb.). The forces on the pinion bearing may become too great, causing it to seize.
Installing Propeller Shaft To Bevel Gear
- Install propeller shaft according to marking on bevel gear flange
- Use new screws.
- Tighten screws crosswise to 8 Nm (5.9 ft.lb.). Then crosswise to 30 Nm (22.1 ft.lb.). Start tightening with the same screw both times. Use counterhold 999 5561.
Installing Center Bearing Member And Center Bearing Bracket
Install:
- Center bearing member on car body. Tighten to 25 Nm (18.5 ft.lb.).
- Center bearing bracket on cross member. Tighten to 25 Nm (18.5 ft.lb.).
- Check oil level in bevel gear Top up if necessary.
