Test Drive Form

GENERAL
This information is a guide to road testing when checking customer complaints about the AW 50-42 automatic transmission. Please observe speed limits.
When test driving use the Volvo, or equivalent, Scan Tool (ST) to obtain different values and functions.

INITIAL STATUS BEFORE TEST DRIVING
- Check oil level in the transmission before test driving.
- Program selector set to mode E (Economy).

TEST DRIVING
1. Verifying operation of the Park/Neutral Position Switch:
- Try to start the car with the gear selector in position P.
- Try to start the car with the gear selector in a position other than P or N
2. Checking sear selector positions:
- Check that the selector engages in each position, and that it does not try to jump out of the selected position.
3. Checking reverse gear:
- Back up the car as usual, ensuring that the backup (reversing) light comes on.
4. Listen for mechanical noises:
- Start in D.
- Drive the car so that the transmission shifts up and down.
- Listen for abnormal noises from the transmission.
- If noises occur, discontinue the test drive immediately, return to the workshop and fault-trace according to Mechanical Malfunction symptom Table. Testing and Inspection
5. Verify transmission mode while driving:
- SPORT (S)
Transmission should give quicker downshifting.
Refer to Transmission Shift Speeds. Mechanical Specifications
- WINTER (W)
Start in position D.
The transmission should start in third gear and give a smooth take-up from standstill.
Verify operation of kickdown.
Refer to Transmission Shift Speeds. Mechanical Specifications
- ECONOMY (E)
Start in D.
Check shifting speeds at lowest possible acceleration.
Also note whether the gears slip or shifting is hard.
Verify operation of the lock-up function.
Lock-up does not operate at a throttle opening of less than 4%.
- Start in D.
Depress accelerator pedal (AP) to kickdown position (wide open throttle (WOT)).
After the shift from 1st to 2nd, reduce the throttle to just below the kickdown threshold (1% throttle).
Check gear shifting speeds for the appropriate engine variant, refer to Transmission Shift Speeds. Mechanical Specifications
Also note whether the gears slip or shifting is hard.
Verify operation of the lock-up function as follows:
Slowly accelerate. Press gently on brake pedal, maintain throttle opening. Lock-up should disengage.
- Start in D.
Depress accelerator pedal (AP) to kickdown position at different speeds.
Check the HIGHEST speed at which kickdown downshift occurs.
- With the car on a flat road with the gear selector in N. release the brake and accelerate a little.
Does the car move forward?
- Start in position 3.
Drive until third gear engages.
Release accelerator pedal and check whether engine braking occurs in 1 st gear.
Move gear selector to L -at a higher speed and allow the car to decelerate.
Check the shifting points as the car slows.
- Start in position L.
Accelerate and check that engine braking occurs.
- Move the gear selector to P with the car stationary on an incline and release the brake.
