Programming The ECC Control Module
Programming the ECC control module
General information about programming
Note! Before replacing a control module all programmed data must be read out first if this is possible. This is so that the new control module can be programmed with the same data. Check all the variable parameters for the new climate control module.
The ECC control module can be programmed with certain information. The purpose of the programming is to adjust the control module to the car version or when the requests of the driver for certain adjustments to the settings.
For more information about the values, see Description of ECC programmed data Description of ECC Programmed Data.

Programming driver position (LHD or RHD)
Note! In order for a new ECC control module to function, the control module must be programmed for the driver position (LHD or RHD). A control module that has not been programmed will not operate at all and the green indicator LEDs in the REC and AC buttons will flash. After programming with the driver position, the green LED in the A/C button will flash and continue to do so until the self-adjustment of the damper motor is complete.
- Ignition on
- Use the Programming function to read out and program the ECC control module. Programmable data is: left-hand drive or right-hand drive . If the control module was not previously programmed no data can be read off.
Read off the driver position. Note the value. If the programming is not correct, program in the correct version.
Any further programming to be carried out?
Yes - Programming the engine type
No - Information
-------------------------------------------------
Programming the engine type
Note! This programming will enable the ECC control module to adapt the climate control to the actual heating capability of the engine type in the car. Diesel engines take longer to reach operating temperature.
- Ignition on
- Use the Programming function to read off and program the ECC control module. Programmable data is: gasoline or diesel engine . If the control module was not previously programmed no data can be read off.
Read off the engine type. Make a note of the value. If the programming is not correct, program in the correct version.
Any further programming to be carried out?
Yes - Programming the passenger compartment ventilation filter
No - Information
-------------------------------------------------
Programming the passenger compartment ventilation filter
Note! If the car has a passenger compartment ventilation filter the control module must be programmed with this information. This causes the control module to increase blower fan speeds and the air flow to compensate for the resistance from the filter unit. If the control module is not programmed for a ventilation filter when there is a filter installed, the air flow will be reduced. This may affect the efficiency of the demisting of the interior of the windows. However the noise levels from the blower fan will be slightly lower. However, if the control module is programmed for a passenger compartment ventilation filter and the filter is not installed, this will cause a higher air flow which makes demisting of the windows more efficient, but also results in a slightly higher noise level.
- Take off the cover panel over the blower fan air intake to determine if the car has a passenger compartment ventilation filter installed
- Ignition on
- Use the Programming function to read off and program the ECC control module. Programmable data is: with or without a passenger compartment ventilation filter. If the control module was not previously programmed no data can be read off.
Read off if a passenger compartment ventilation filter is programmed. Make a note of the value. If the programming is not correct, program in the correct version.
Any further programming to be carried out?
Yes - Programming the passenger compartment temperature
No - Information
-------------------------------------------------
Programming the passenger compartment temperature
Note! The relation between the temperature in the passenger compartment and the temperature setting on the selector knob can be reprogrammed. The passenger compartment temperature can be increased or reduced by a maximum of 2°C from the normal setting. This allows some account to be taken of the driver's wishes regarding the temperature settings in the car.
- Ignition on
- Use the Programming function to read off and program the ECC control module. Programmable temperature is: between ±2°C in steps of 0.5°C .
Make a note of the programmed passenger compartment temperature. Program as necessary.
Any further programming to be carried out?
Yes - Programming the blower fan speed
No - Information
-------------------------------------------------
Programming the blower fan speed
Note! The cabin blower fan speed (air flow) can be programmed when the blower fan switch is in the AUT position. The air flow can be increased or reduced by a maximum of 8 liters per second from the normal setting. If the control module is programmed for a lower air flow, this will result in slightly lower noise levels in the car, but also in slightly reduced air circulation. This can make demisting the windows less efficient. If, however, the control module is programmed for a higher air flow, this will result in slightly higher noise levels in the car. It will also result in increased air circulation which can make demisting the windows more efficient.
- Ignition on
- Use the Programming function to read off and program the ECC control module. Programmable blower fan speed is: between ±8 l/s in steps of 4 l/s .
Make a note of the programmed blower fan speed. Program as necessary.
Any further programming to be carried out?
Yes - Selection of control module sensor version when programming the sun sensor
No - Information
-------------------------------------------------
Selection of control module sensor version when programming the sun sensor
Note! The sensitivity of the sun sensor cannot be programmed on certain older control module variants. The P/N of the control module must be read off to identify the control module version.
- Ignition on
- Read off the P/N of the ECC control module. Compare it with the P/N below.
The sensitivity of the sun sensor cannot be programmed on the following control modules (P/N):
- 9134783
- 9134784
- 9171404
- 9171405
- 9171551
- 9171552.
Is the control module P/N different from the above list?
Yes - Programming the sensitivity of the sun sensor
No - Information
-------------------------------------------------
Programming the sensitivity of the sun sensor
Note! The intensity of the sun affects the temperature in the passenger compartment. In order to maintain a stable climate in the passenger compartment, irrespective of the intensity of the sun, the ECC control module calculates the climate control based on the signal from the sun sensor (which indicates the intensity of the sunlight). The sensitivity to the sunlight can be programmed. This allows the calculation of temperature settings by the ECC control module to be adapted. This allows for climate control that can be adapted to the wishes of the driver. The sensitivity can be set in 7 stages from -4 to +2. The higher the value chosen, the more the control module compensates for the intensity of the sun. However, if the compensation is set too high, draughts may be felt in the passenger compartment when the blower fan speed increases slightly. The lower the setting chosen, the less the control module compensates for the intensity of the sunlight. If the setting selected is too low, the passenger compartment may become too warm when the intensity of the sunlight is high.
Note! The setting should only be changed if it is definitely the sun compensation that the customer is dissatisfied with.
- Ignition on
- Use the Programming function to read off and program the ECC control module. Programmable compensation is: between -4 and +2 in steps of 1 .
Make a note of the programmed sun sensor value. Program as necessary.
Any further programming to be carried out?

- Read off the P/N of the ECC control module. Compare it with the P/N below.
The type of speed signal cannot be programmed on the following control modules (P/N):

- 9171404
- 9171405
- 9171551
- 9171552
- 9171594
- 9171595
- 9459455
- 9459456.
Is the control module P/N different from the above list?
Yes - Programming the speed signal, ECC
No - Information
-------------------------------------------------
Programming the speed signal, ECC
Note! In order for the new ECC control module to function correctly, the speed signal must be programmed. From production week 832 inclusive, the ECC control module has been updated with a new function for the programming of the speed signal from the combined instrument panel. This is because the functionality of the combined instrument panel has been changed. Previously the combined instrument panel had two output signals; a 12 pulsed and a 48 pulsed signal. The ECC control module was connected to the 48 pulse signal. The new combined instrument panel will only have a 12 pulsed speed signal. Therefore the ECC control module is connected to the 12 pulsed signal. The new ECC control modules replace the older versions and can be installed in both new and older cars. To obtain the correct functionality, the new ECC control module must be programmed for the correct type of speed signal. The new combined instrument panel has the text "Max" instead of a digit at the maximum fuel level in the fuel gauge. On older combined instrument panels the ECC control module must be programmed for 48 pulses. On new combined instrument panels the ECC control module must be programmed for 12 pulses.

- Use the Programming function to read off and program the ECC control module.
Make a note of the current programming. Program the correct version.
