System Overview
System overview
Location of components
The central locking function uses the following components (may differ depending on model, model year, options and market):
Locking system
The lock system is available in the following versions:
- Central locking with single step unlocking
- Central locking deadlock (differs in the lock unit from single step unlocking). Not available in USA and Canada
- Central locking with power child lock. Market dependent
- Central locking with two step unlocking andwithoutfuel tank filler cover opening via remote switch. Applies to the USA and Canada only
- Central locking with two step unlocking andwithfuel tank filler cover opening via remote switch. Applies to the USA and Canada only.
The number of switches, electrical motors in the door and relays, differs depending on the model year, version and type. The same control modules are used in different versions. The software differs on the type of lock, locking system and model. It is possible to shift between single step unlocking and two step unlocking by downloading new software.
Initiation
The central locking system must be reinitiated after the battery has been disconnected. This is carried out by unlocking the car using either the remote control or the key in the driver's door. If the central locking system is not initiated, the switches in the driver's door module and the passenger door module will not work.
Function
The user can control the different central locking functions using:
- The key in the driver's door lock cylinder
- Remote control
- The switches in the driver's door module and the passenger door module
- The switch in the trunk lid handle (S60/S80 only)
- The switches in the center console
- Emergency lock cylinder in the trunk lid / tailgate (only S60/S80 and V70/V70XC with auxiliary rear facing seat)
- The switch on the control module for the light switch module for opening the fuel tank filler cover. Only applies to cars with a fuel tank filler cover remote switch.
The number of switches, lock cylinders, differs depending on the version of lock system.
Locking and unlocking doors
The doors can be locked:
- Using the key in the driver's door lock cylinder
- Using the remote control LOCK button
- Using the switches in the driver's door module and the passenger door module The function is disabled if the car is locked from outside or using the remote control. For single step locking all doors must be closed so that locking can be carried out using the switch. For two step unlocking with the ignition key removed all the doors lock at the same time using the switch even if a door is open.
Note! If the ignition key is in the ignition switch the car cannot be locked using the remote control or using a key in the driver's door. If the ignition key is in the ignition switch and the driver's door is open and the button on the driver's door module is pressed then the doors lock and immediately unlock. These two functions prevent locking the key in the car.
The doors can be unlocked:
- Using the key in the driver's door lock cylinder
- Using the remote control UNLOCK button
- Using the switches in the driver's door module and the passenger door module The function is disabled if the car is locked using a key or using the remote control
- Via a request from the SRS (supplemental restraint system) control module in the event of a collision.
Locking and unlocking the fuel tank filler cover, modelswithoutfuel tank filler cover opening via remote switch
The fuel tank filler cover can be locked:
- Using the key in the driver's door lock cylinder (fuel tank filler cover locking is delayed 10 min, from structure week 200020 inclusive)
- Using the remote control LOCK button (fuel tank filler cover locking is delayed 10 min, from structure week 200020 inclusive)
- Using the switches in the driver's door module and the passenger door module (from structure week 200020 inclusive the switch inside the car is disconnected from the fuel tank filler cover lock). The function is disabled if the car is locked from outside or using the remote control.
The fuel tank filler cover can be unlocked:
- Using the key in the driver's door lock cylinder
- Using the remote control UNLOCK button
- Using the switches in the driver's door module and the passenger door module (from structure week 200020 inclusive the switch inside the car is disconnected from the fuel tank filler cover lock). The function is disabled if the car is locked from outside or using the remote control.
Locking and unlocking the fuel tank filler cover, modelswithfuel tank filler cover opening via remote switch (market dependant)
The fuel tank filler cover can be locked:
- Automatically when the speed of the car exceeds 7 km/h (5 mph).
The fuel tank filler cover can be unlocked:
- Using the switch above the light switch.
At 7 km/h (5 mph) the fuel tank filler cover locks automatically and remains locked until the switch is reactivated. The fuel tank filler cover lock is unaffected by the remote control. Locking and unlocking the doors and other hatches is carried out the same way as for modelswithoutfuel tank filler cover opening via remote switch.
Modelswithfuel tank filler cover opening via remote switch are equipped with a fuel leakage detecting system. The system for fuel leakage detecting pressurizes the fuel system to trace any leakage. The test is carried after the ignition has been switched off. When the switch is activated any leakage detection underway is stopped to evacuate the over pressure from the fuel tank. The over pressure is evacuated to prevent the fuel from traveling up the fuel filler pipe when the fuel tank filler cap is opened.
Opening and unlocking the trunk (S60/S80)
- It is possible to unlock the trunk alone by pressing the separate trunk button on the remote control, twice within 3 seconds
- When the car is locked the electrical switch in the trunk handle is deactivated and the trunk cannot be opened
- When the car is unlocked the handle for the trunk is activated and the trunk can be opened using the handle.
Note! On cars with two step unlocking the switch in the trunk is only active when the car is fully unlocked (second step).
Opening and unlocking the tailgate (V70/V70XC)
- It is possible to unlock the tailgate alone by pressing the separate tailgate button on the remote control, twice within 3 seconds
- When the car is locked the handle for the tailgate mechanically disconnects from the lock unit. The tailgate cannot be opened
- When the car is unlocked the handle for the tailgate mechanically connected to the lock unit. The tailgate can be opened using the handle.
Automatic functions
- If the car is unlocked and no doors are opened within 2 minutes the car relocks automatically
- If the lock button in the driver or passenger doors is depressed when the door is open the switch returns to the upper (unlocked) position
- When the tailgate has been unlocked using the remote control, the tailgate locks automatically when it closes. After structure week 200020 the tailgate does not lock on V70/V70XC models
- The doors and hatches lock automatically at speeds above 7 km/h (5 mph), (option, market dependent)
- When the SRS (supplemental restraint system) control module registers a collision all the doors and hatches unlock.
Deadlocked (market dependent)
If the car is locked using the key or the remote control the deadlock is activated after approximately 25 seconds. The doors cannot be opened from the inside.
If a door is opened from the inside before the deadlock is engaged, deadlock will not be activated. In order to lock the car again the car must be unlocked first. Then the car can be locked as normal.
The deadlock is deactivated if, when the car is locked, the ignition key is inserted in the ignition switch and turned to position II.
The function can be disconnected using the switch for the reduced alarm in the center console.
Information that the function is disengaged is given by:
- the LED in the button remaining lit until the car is locked
- a text message being displayed in the driver information module.
Next time the ignition key is inserted and turned to position II, the system is reset. To obtain reduced alarm the switch must be reactivated.
Two step unlocking (market dependent)
Certain markets have two step unlocking. The differences are:
- When unlocking using the key, the key must be turned anticlockwise twice within 10 seconds to unlock all the doors and hatches
- When unlocking using the remote control, the UNLOCK button must be pressed twice within 10 seconds to unlock all the doors and hatches. On cars with the fuel tank filler cover opening via remote switch, the fuel tank filler cover only opens via the switch
- To unlock the driver's door and fuel tank filler cover using the key, turn the key anticlockwise once. On cars with the fuel tank filler cover opening via remote switch, the fuel tank filler cover only opens via the switch
- To unlock the driver's door and fuel tank filler cover using the remote control, press the UNLOCK button once. On cars with the fuel tank filler cover opening via remote switch, the fuel tank filler cover only opens via the switch
- If the driver's door is open at the same time that the switch in the driver's door is used for locking, the car will lock. That is on the condition that the key is not in the ignition switch.
For more information see models with fuel tank filler cover opening via remote switch (market dependant).
Power child lock (option)
Mechanical (manual) child locks are standard in the back doors.
A power child lock is available as a factory installed option. The child lock is activated / deactivated using a switch in the climate control unit panel.
Cars equipped with two stage unlocking (USA, Canada) are not equipped with the power child locks.
Valet locking (option on S60/S80 only)
The valet lock prevents access to the cargo compartment under certain conditions. If the valet lock switch is pressed down when the master key is in the ignition switch, a message ("Valet lock on") is displayed in the driver information module. The trunk lid cannot then be opened using either the remote control or switch in the trunk lid. The valet lock remains in function until the ignition is switched on using the master key and the valet lock switch is pressed. A message ("Valet lock off") is displayed in the driver information module and normal function is resumed.
The valet lock function makes it possible for the driver to store objects in the cargo compartment safely as long as the valet key is used. The valet key can be used in the driver's door and the ignition switch. It cannot be used in the glove compartment or in the emergency lock cylinder in the trunk lid.
Acknowledgement (market dependent)
The lock system provides a visual acknowledgement when locking and unlocking.
When the car is locked this is acknowledged by a long single flash from the turn signal lamps. If a door or hatch is open when the car is locked, the flash is delayed until these are closed. Applies only to cars equipped with an alarm.
When the car is unlocked this is either not acknowledged or acknowledged by two short flashes from the turn signal lamps.
This function is market dependent and is programmed via VIDA.
