Steering Column: Service and Repair






Replacing the steering column / steering shaft

Caution! Cars with DSTC systems. When working on the steering or wheel alignment, the adaptation of the steering wheel angle must be set to zero using the diagnostic tool. Test drive. Removing the steering column / steering shaft

Remove the steering wheel
- Remove the steering wheel module. See Steering wheel module (SWM), replacing Service and Repair.




- Remove the locking screw from the ""parking hole"" in the steering wheel. Install the screw in the contact reel.




- Remove the steering wheel screw
- Ensure that the front wheels and steering wheel are in the straight-ahead position
- Remove the steering wheel.

Note! Take care to ensure that the connector does not catch on the steering wheel during removal.

Remove the steering column covers

Remove the soundproofing panel
Remove the soundproofing panel. See Soundproofing panel, replacing Soundproofing Panel, Replacing.

Remove the steering wheel lock unit




- Remove the connectors
- Press in the snap fastener and remove the steering wheel lock unit.

Remove the ignition switch interlock cable (only automatic transmission)





Applies to cars with automatic transmission:
- Remove the mechanical cable for the ignition switch interlock
- Move the ignition key to position I
- Press up the lock facing and pull out the cable.

Remove the gear selector assembly

Remove the floor lighting




- Remove the floor lighting.




- Remove the cable sleeve from the steering column and place it on the floor.

Remove the steering wheel lock




- Drill out the security screws holding the steering wheel lock
- Remove the steering wheel lock.

Remove the joint from lower steering shaft




- Remove the lower steering shaft joint mounting screw
- Remove the joint from the lower steering shaft.

Remove the steering column and the steering shaft




- Remove the four screws holding the steering column
- Pull the steering column backwards from the three guides.




- Pull the steering shaft out from the steering column.




- Pull out the steering column a little and turn it a half turn to the left until it is upside down.




- Pull out the steering column backwards and angled to the left.

Installing the steering column / steering shaft

Install the steering column and the steering shaft




- Insert the steering column upside down.




- Turn to the right to the correct position.




- Install the steering shaft on the steering column
- Ensure that the splines on the steering shaft are clean
- Lubricate the steering shaft splines and the steering column bearing. Use low temperature grease,P/N 1161417-9(30 grams).
Lubrication is important to avoid noise from the steering column.





Note! Check that the rear seat rails are undamaged.

- Hook the steering column into the three guides
- Install the screws. Tighten to 25 Nm.Tighten the rear screw first.

Install the steering shaft joint on the lower steering shaft




- Set the front wheels to the straight ahead position
- Install the upper steering shaft joint on the lower steering shaft
- Install anew screw. Tighten to 30 Nm.

Install the cable sleeve on the steering column




- Install the cable sleeve on the steering column.

Install the floor lighting




- Install the floor lighting and connect the connector.

Install the soundproofing panel
See Soundproofing panel, replacing Soundproofing Panel, Replacing.

Install the steering wheel lock




- Install the ignition key in the steering wheel lock
- Check that the key is in position I. Check that the locking lug on the steering wheel lock is down
- Install the steering wheel lock against the cap on the steering column
- Install the new security screws
- Tighten the security screws until the screw heads break off.

Install the cable for the ignition switch interlock (only automatic transmission)





Applies to cars with automatic transmissions
- Move the gear selector lever to position P
- Move the ignition key to position I
- Press the mechanical cable into the ignition switch and feel to see that it is correctly secured
- Remove the ignition key and check that the gear selector lever is blocked in P position.

Install the steering wheel lock unit




- Remove the ignition key
- Install the connector and the steering wheel lock unit
- Connect the connectors.

Install the lever unit

Connect the lever unit connectors.

Install the steering column covers

Zero the contact reel
Zero the contact reel. See Contact reel driver airbag module, resetting Adjustments.

Install the steering wheel and check the steering wheel position





Note! Check that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.

- Pull the connectors from the contact reel through the steering wheel
- Install the steering wheel carefully so that both catches on the contact reel are seated in the two recesses in the steering wheel hub
- Install the steering wheel screw. Use anew screw. Finger tighten.

Caution! Do not turn the steering wheel when it is on the steering shaft. Since the contact reel is locked, it will be damaged beyond repair if the wheel is turned in this situation.

- Remove the locking screw holding the contact reel. Install it in the parking hole in the steering wheel
- Connect two tools951 1506 Test dummy 951 1506 Test Dummy to the SRS wiring on the contact reel
- Drive the car straight forward and check that the steering wheel is in the "straight ahead" position.
If the steering wheel position is incorrect repeat the adjustment

Tighten the screw in the center of the steering wheel
- Remove the two tools951 1506 Test dummy 951 1506 Test Dummy
- Tighten the steering wheel screw. Tighten to 40 Nm
- Check that the SRS light is extinguished, i.e. that no DTCs are present.

Install the steering wheel module
Steering wheel module (SWM), replacing Service and Repair.

Check the function
Ensure that the steering wheel turns easily and that the steering lock functions.
Check that no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) have been stored while the repair was carried out.
