Side Impact Air Bags
Side Impact Air Bags
There are two side impact protection (SIPS) bags connected to the supplemental restraint system module (SRS). These connections are electrically separated from each other. The side impact protection (SIPS) bags are located on the outer side edge of the front seats. Deployment of the side impact airbags occurs on the side of the collision. Their task is to protect the torso of occupants in the event of a side on collision.
The side airbags together with the inflatable curtains protect the front driver and passenger in the event of an accident. The side impact protection (SIPS) bags use a smaller pyrotechnical charge. This is connected to a reservoir containing Argon and Helium. When the control module deploys the side impact protection (SIPS) bags the pyrotechnical charge heats up the holder which detonates. A mixture of gases and powder charge fills the airbag.
NOTE: Ohmmeters or similar must not be used when testing the airbags or seat belt tensioner. Disconnect the airbags or seat belt tensioners before testing. The airbags may accidentally deploy if this is not done. Which can result in very serious injury or death.
