Cars equipped with SRS/SIPS (Airbag)
Warning! Extra care must be taken when working on cars equipped with SRS/SIPS air bags. This is important to prevent:1. Personal injury2. Damage to or malfunction of the SRS/SIPS system.Work on the SRS/SIPS systems or related components must be carried out by an authorised Volvo workshop.
Is the car equipped with SRS/SIPS?
Cars with SRS are most easily recognised by the letters SRS on the steering wheel pad. If the car also has an airbag on the passenger side, the letters SRS are embossed on the dashboard above the glove compartment. SIPS decals are located on the seat panels and the windscreen.
Do not damage the SRS wiring!
Do not trap, fray, pierce or damage the SRS wiring. SRS wiring has orange casing and/or is plaited.
Steering and front suspension
The contact reel in the SRS system can easily be damaged when working on the steering wheel, steering shaft or steering gear. Refer to the SRS service information for information on carrying out such work. This is to prevent damage.
SRS warning lamp
If the SRS warning lamp lights after repairs have been carried out, take the car to an authorised Volvo workshop.
SRS collision sensor control module
S60 / V70 (00-) / S80
The collision sensor control module is located on the transmission tunnel in the centre console, beside the parking brake. The air bag inflation areas must not be obstructed. Never place any objects, such as upholstery, within these areas. The panels must be able to open in the correct way and at the right time.
WARNING!
The ignition must be in position "0" and the key removed from the ignition if any connector in the SRS system is to be disassembled. Then wait at least five minutes. Then disconnect the battery negative lead before disassembling any of the connectors.
RTI/DVD
Note! There is already a cable harness for the power supply to the CD changer in cars with CD changers. This cable harness must be removed. The new cable harness supplies power to both the CD changer and the RTI/DVD and must be connected in the same position as the old cable harness.Remove the blue connector from the CD changer. Remove the red and white cable from terminal 10 in the fuse holder. Remove the black ground lead from the ground terminal under the left-hand rear seat cushion. Secure the excess wiring. See points 29, 31-34 and 42.
Note! A short DIN cable which must be connected between the CD changer and DVD reader must be purchased separately.
Note! This accessory requires software unique to the car.
- Move the left front seat to the rearmost position. Move the gear selector lever to the rearmost position.
- Turn the ignition key to position 0
- Applies to cars with manual gearboxes: remove the ignition key from the ignition switch.
Applies to cars with automatic gearboxes: leave the ignition key in the ignition switch. The key is locked in the ignition switch.
Note! Wait at least five minutes before disassembling the connectors or removing other electrical equipment.
- Disconnect the battery negative lead.
- Carefully remove the loudspeaker grille (1) from the dashboard. Use a plastic weatherstrip tool.
- Remove the screws (1). Remove the bracket (2).
Applies to cars with a centrally mounted loudspeaker
- Remove the screws for the loudspeaker from the bracket (1)
- Lift up the loudspeaker. Disconnect the connector (2)
- Place the loudspeaker to one side.
- Remove the panel in front of the gear selector lever. Pry off the panel using a plastic weatherstrip tool.
- Remove the panel around the gear selector lever. Press in the two catches at the front edge. Pull the panel upwards.
- Remove the two screws for the dashboard environment panel.
- Angle the dashboard environment panel outwards so that it is possible to insert a couple of fingers between the centre console and the side of the dashboard environment panel
- Detach the dashboard environment panel. Pull it downward, maintaining the same angle. Some force is required because the panel is tightly installed. Disconnect the connectors on the reverse of the dashboard environment panel. Place the dashboard environment panel to one side.
Note! If any of the outer hooks break off, these must be repaired. The method for this can be found in the Workshop Manual in the section about the dashboard.
- Remove the screws from the radio bracket
- Pull out the lower edge of the radio bracket. At the same time press downwards
- Disconnect the connectors from the radio. Remove the radio bracket.
- Lock the steering wheel in the lowest, rearmost position
- Remove the rubber seal from the upper steering wheel cover by carefully prying the 5 catches loose. Use a weatherstrip tool.
- Remove the surround from the combined instrument panel by prying out the two clips (2) in the bottom edge of the combined instrument panel
- Then pull the surround back until the three clips (1) in the upper edge release.
Note! Do not damage the dashboard.
- Remove the four screws holding the combined instrument panel
- Pull out the combined instrument panel. Disconnect the connector on the reverse of the combined instrument panel.
Remove:
- the left-hand side panel (1) from the centre console. First turn the screw clip. Pull the panel outwards and backwards
- the sill trim panel (2) at the left-hand front door
- the covers (3)
- the screws (4).
- Tip the left-hand front seat backwards
- Fold the floor carpet forward to access the air ducts (1).
- Fold the left-hand rear seat cushion forward (1)
- Fold the left hand rear backrest (2) forward.
- Pull the upper edges of the left-hand side cushion backwards and lift the cushion. Remove the cushion.
- Remove the left-hand sill moulding at the rear door.
- Remove the two floor hatches in the cargo compartment.
- Detach the storage box under the rear floor hatch by turning the clip on the left and right-hand sides a 1/4 turn. Lift out the box.
- Remove the left and right-hand folding side panels in the cargo compartment.
- Remove the left-hand side panel (first remove the cover and the screw from the front edge)
- Pull the top edge of the panel inwards until the clips release
- Fold the panel inwards. Lift the panel out.
- Detach the left-hand headlining panel from the cargo compartment by removing the screws at the rear edge
- Then pull the panel downwards. Start at the rear edge until all the clips release. Remove the panel.
- Remove the interior lighting in the panel at the rear edge of the roof by prying it loose. Use a weatherstrip tool
- Remove the screw holding the panel
- Carefully pull off the panel on the left-hand side until the clips release.
- Remove the left-hand D-post panel (1) as follows:
- Pull the centre of the panel inwards until the clips release. (A)
- Pull the top edge of the panel inwards until the clips release. (B)
- Pull the panel inwards starting at the upper rear edge. Pull along the entire left-hand tailgate sill until the clips release. (C)
- Remove the panel.
- Remove the fuse holder by opening the lock (1) on the top of the fuse holder. Fold the fusebox holder forward and lift it out of the mountings (2)
- Remove the black insulation panel (3), which is secured by five clips. This will not be used again. A new panel is in the kit.
- Remove the small insulation panel from behind the fuse holder.

- Route the cable harness (A in the kit illustration) for the display screen and radio. Route the cable with the ten pin connectors to the display screen (B in the kit illustration). Route the black cable for the GPS aerial (C in the kit illustration) to the radio socket, between the air duct (1) and the stay (2). Ensure that the straight connector on the loose cable (B) is routed to the cut out for the radio
- Route the blue 5-pin power supply connector (3) for the display screen and the cable (B) to the left of the air ducts above the cut out for the radio. Continue up through the cut out for the dashboard loudspeaker
- Route the black cable (C) for the GPS aerial behind the combined instrument panel
- Clamp the wiring to the stay (2). Use the tie strap (4) from the kit
- Route the wiring above and along the air duct (1) to the member (5)
- Secure the wiring at the existing cable harness (6) using the tie strap from the kit.
Applies to illustration B
- Connect the GPS aerial (1) (from the kit) to the pre-routed cable (2)
- Install the GPS aerial as far in as possible in the combined instrument panel compartment
- Press the GPS aerial clips (3) into the existing holes. Tighten the aerial using the screw (4) from the kit
- Connect the combined instrument panel connector
- Reinstall the combined instrument panel
- Reinstall the combined instrument panel surround
- Secure the rubber seal in the upper steering column cover.
- Route the wiring (1) under the carpet along the left-hand side of the car to the rear door
- Clamp the wiring at the existing cable harness (2)
- Install protective caps on the lugs (3) for the cable ducts
- Route the wiring further above and along the front cable duct (4). Continue along the right-hand side of the rear cable duct (5)
- Connect the cable to the rear ground terminal (6) at the left-hand side of the rear seat.
- Continue routing the wiring (1) along the rear cable duct (2)
- Disconnect the four connectors in the cable duct. Position the three cables under these
- Route the wiring along the left-hand side of the wheel arch. Position as illustrated.
Applies only to cars with a CD changer
- Remove all the fuses (1) from the outside of the fuse holder.
Applies only to cars with a CD changer
- Remove the decal from the face of the fuse holder
- Carefully pry up the red secondary lock until a click is heard.
Applies only to cars with a CD changer
- Insert a small, thin screwdriver in the outer terminal in fuse socket number 10
- Locate the small spring catch on the inside
- Bend the catch out of the way by inserting the screwdriver in the direction of the arrow. At the same time pull the cable out
- Connect the new red and white cable. Press in the secondary lock. Reinstall the decal on the face.
- Connect the newly routed red and white cable to the outer terminal (1) on the reverse of fuse socket number 10 on the fuse holder.
To position the cable: carefully pry up the red secondary lock on the face in the end nearest terminal 10. At the same time press the cable into position. If the cable cannot be positioned carry out points 31-33 in the same way as when removing the cable
- Install a 10A fuse in fuse socket 10 on the fuse holder.
- Slacken off the screw (1)
- Pull out the cover (2) and the four connectors
- Remove the cover from the four connectors by bending the three hooks to one side.
Note! Connect the wiring to connector A. Note the terminal number for the connector as it is situated on the connector holder.
- Insert a small screwdriver in the socket as illustrated
- Twist the screwdriver so that the holders open. At the same time press the connector out to the side
- Connect the white (W) cable to terminal 15 and the green (GN) cable to terminal 17
- Reinstall the connector
- Reinstall the cover on the connector
- Reinstall the connectors on the fuse holder. Tighten the screw.
- Install the new insulation panel (from the kit). See point 26
- Reinstall the fuse holder. See point 26.
- Remove the four screws in the tailgate sill panel.
- Position the short single cable along the tailgate sill trim panel.
Note! The cable end with the plastic connector must be on the left-hand side.
- Pull up the plastic connector to the control module
- Route the other end of the cable in front of the right-hand tail lamp to the aerial amplifier
- Carefully pull the tailgate sill trim panel upwards by the outer edges on the right and left-hand sides until a click is heard and the clips release
- Lift the panel and insert the cable harness (1) in the gap between the floor support (2) and the panel
- Insert the cable as far under the panel as possible. Ensure that the cable is not trapped
- Press the panel into place
- Reinstall the screws in the panel. Tighten.
- Take the aerial amplifier (1) from the kit. Connect the cable (2) to the connector (3) for the aerial in the rear bumper by the right-hand tail lamp
- Position the aerial amplifier on the edge of the panel in front of the right tail lamp as illustrated
- Tighten the aerial amplifier.
- Clamp the cable under the tailgate sill trim panel using the four tie straps (1) from the kit
- Connect the cable to the lower socket (2) on the aerial amplifier
- Route the cable to the left-hand rear wheel well.
Applies only to cars with a CD changer
Remove:
- the blue connector with the cable (1) from the CD changer. Secure the cable. The cable will not be reused
- the DIN cable (2) from the CD changer. Position the DIN cable at the front edge of the CD changer. the DIN cable will be connected to the reverse of the DVD reader later.
Applies only to cars with a CD changer
- Take the DIN cable (1) (purchased separately). Connect the cable to the rear edge of the CD changer
- Connect the blue connector (2) on the new power supply cable for the CD changer.
- Screw the DVD reader into place on the bracket. Use the four screws from the kit.
Connect:
- the cable (1) for the display screen
- the power supply cable (2)
- the GPS aerial cable (3) for the GPS aerial
- the cable (4) for the aerial amplifier.
Applies only to cars with a CD changer
Connect:
- the cable (1) for the display screen
- the power supply cable (2)
- the GPS aerial cable (3) for the GPS aerial
- the cable (4) for the aerial amplifier
- the short DIN cable (5) from the CD changer
- the DIN cable (6) previously disconnected from the CD changer.
- Screw the DVD reader into place with the bracket above the left-hand rear wheel well. Use the three screws (1) from the kit. Ensure that none of the wiring is caught or trapped
- Tighten the screws. Tighten to 10 Nm (7.5 lbf.ft)
- Secure the wiring behind the wheel arch. Use tie straps from the kit.
- Install the insulation panel from the kit above the DVD reader
- Secure the insulation panel using the two clips (1) from the kit.
Applies to cars without a centrally mounted loudspeaker
- Install the bracket (1) on the display (2). Use the screws (3) (from the kit).
Applies to cars with a centrally mounted loudspeaker
- Install the bracket (1) on the display screen (2). Use the front screw (3).
Applies to cars without a centrally mounted loudspeaker
- Connect the wiring for the DVD reader (1) to the display (2)
- Install the display screen with the bracket in the dashboard using the existing screws (3)
- Press the new loudspeaker grille into place on the dashboard.
Applies to cars with a centrally mounted loudspeaker
- Install the centrally mounted loudspeaker in the display screen bracket
- Tighten the loudspeaker into place using the four screws
- Connect the connectors for the centrally mounted loudspeaker in the dashboard and the display screen bracket
- Install the connector (1) for the centrally mounted loudspeaker underneath the left-hand side of the bracket as illustrated.
Applies to cars with a centrally mounted loudspeaker
- Connect the three cables (1) to the display screen (and the centrally mounted loudspeaker)
- Press the display screen and bracket into the dashboard. Tighten using the four existing screws (2)
- Press the new loudspeaker grille into place on the dashboard.
Connect:
- the green female connector on the new cable harness to the green male connector disconnected from the radio
- the other two large connectors to the radio
- the other connectors disconnected from the radio.
Reinstall:
- the radio
- the climate control panel after connecting the connectors on the reverse
- the panel with the gear selector lever boot
- the panel in front of the gear selector lever
- the carpet
- the side panel for the centre console
- the sill trim panels on the left-hand side
- the left-hand front seat. Tighten the front edge of the seat. Tighten the seat using the new screws from the kit. Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lbf.ft.)
- the cover above the screws at the front edge of the seat
- the D-post panel and the headlining
- the small insulation panel at the fusebox
- the left-hand side panel. Press the surround for the DVD reader onto the side panel. See the illustration
- the left-hand side cushion
- the rear backrest and seat cushion
- both the rear folding side panels
- the front floor hatch.
- Turn the ignition key to position II
- Reconnect the battery negative lead
- Reinstall the storage compartment and the rear floor hatch
- Program the software according to the service information in VIDA.
